This week Jocelyn and Alyssa get into the nitty gritty of having resume work. They discuss how to update, what to update, the difference between modern and traditional, and what all the corporate jargon you need to catch the eyes of the employers.

Do’s

  • Contact Information - phone number and an email
  • Work Experience and Achievements - your title, your description, what you did for the company, any bullet points that highlight you in a better fashion
  • Top Soft and Hard Skills - Soft skills that are personal - people skills, versatile, greater communicator, time management, research and critical analysis, etc. Hard skills - measurable technical proficiencies - word, adobe suite, google suite, etc.
  • Languages
  • Certifications - should be relevant and up to date
  • Volunteer work - great way to fill empty space, also shows that you have values, not always necessary especially if you already have a lot on your resume.
  • Have two different resumes if you are someone who is looking for multiple different kinds of jobs.
  • Entry level - List all your work
  • Mid Level - List only relevant work
  • Senior Level - List relevant, but also only 15 years max.
  • KEEP YOUR RESUME TO ONE PAGE!!!
  • Most recent work to the oldest work.
  • Relevant coursework for people who are fresh out of college or high school.
  • Adding statistics that may improve the way you look for a job.
  • Keywords are KING! - Tailor your resume to whatever job you are applying for. Making sure to add those keywords you saw in the job description into your resume.
  • Hobbies and Interests - only add if relevant to the job you are applying for.
  • Publications & Awards - only if relevant.
  • Personal Projects - only if relevant.
  • Dates of when your jobs start and end if you have space

Don’t

  • Don’t lie on your resume
  • Extracurricular activities
  • Photo of yourself
  • Date of birth
  • Unprofessional Email Address

Other things to note:

  • Use a thesaurus.
  • Keep it relevant to the job.
  • Use Keywords
  • Make it legible when it comes to fonts. It should not be hard to read at a glance.
  • Use pen colors
