The lesson of Legos
In the summer of 2019, I had occasion to assist a good friend in moving
a lady from Maryland to her new place in Brooklin NY. The trip was
monumental in several ways, not the least of which was learning to
navigate the somewhat congested roads and subway systems in the
city.
For accommodations, we had arranged to stay with my friend’s former
pastor, whom I had never met. We arrived at his door on the first
evening and were warmly greeted shortly after knocking. Following
some pleasantries, we were invited in and, as I crossed the threshold, I
noticed a Lego block in the corner of the door frame.
That Lego block warmed my heart as I felt the kid inside me awake and
it set the stage for a wonderful visit with their family. His kids are now
in high school and we are still good friends, but, to this day, we all laugh
at the Lego block that ushered in the warmth to establish a bond and a
lasting friendship.
