#189 With Peter Ryan; Paralympian & Endurance Athlete.
Manage episode 481567647 series 2726081
Along with having football trials for Ireland underage, Peter Ryan was representing Tipperary in hurling at minor level.
Life was great until he realised his vision was getting worse and he was starting to make mistakes on the pitch.
At 19 he was officially registered as blind. He turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism and found himself in a rehab centre for alcohol addiction at 23.
This is an incredible story of resilience and of creating a new identity. Peter went on to represent Ireland in the Paralympic in Rio in 2016.
Huge endurance events followed, such as the Race around Ireland, and the Malin to Mizen run.
