On May 26, 1971, Captain Dick Allgood writes from Bien Hoa Air Base in Vietnam to his pregnant wife, Captain Sarah Allgood, stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. It’s a quiet day—he’s on alert, flying just two hours, watching the Emmys, and aching for a letter that didn’t arrive.

Still, his focus never wavers. He checks in on their baby-to-be, gently reminds her to see the doctor, and holds space for their growing family through the only thread that connects them: letters. His words are filled with tenderness, humor, and steady devotion.

Though far from the front lines that many Marines endured, Dick’s role as a rescue pilot meant he had to be ready at any moment to launch into danger. That readiness—paired with his humility—defined him. He didn’t talk much about Vietnam later in life, perhaps because his experience felt so different. But in these letters, we hear the quiet truth: a man who led with calm, lived with love, and longed for home.

This is the story of war told from a different angle—through daily devotion, steady hands, and the heart of a father waiting to meet his child
