Both players encountered "mud balls," where wet soil adhered to the ball, impacting shot accuracy. On the 16th hole, both players hit into the water after strong tee shots, leading to double bogeys. Scheffler, who finished the round at 2-under par, argued that such conditions created unfair challenges, especially on overseeded fairways .
