Steve Hatch’s story is a powerful example of humble beginnings, internal drive, and long-term elite performance in off-road racing. Starting with a $35 minibike and no racing background in his family, Steve worked his way from upstate New York through motocross and off-road circuits to become a factory rider for Suzuki and Kawasaki. A standout moment in his early career came when he placed unexpectedly high in a national enduro on bald tires and without a headlight, which launched him into the spotlight. Throughout his 18-year professional career, Steve credited his inner fire, relentless training, and goal-setting for keeping him competitive, even as he overcame multiple injuries—including a broken back in 1997 while leading the GNCC championship.
Beyond his physical skills, Steve emphasized the crucial role of mental toughness and psychological tools, developed with the help of his wife Denise, a leading sports mindset coach. He recounted how her guidance helped him overcome PTSD-like race flashbacks after his back injury. Together, they have worked with many top athletes including Caleb Russell, Ryan Sipes, Cody Webb, and more. Steve also stressed the importance of articulating feedback, building long-term sponsor relationships, and reinventing oneself to stay sharp—whether in racing or life. Despite 50+ broken bones, Steve finished his career on his own terms, placing in the top five across multiple national series.
