His wrists are bound and there is a rope tied around his neck. He is positioned on loose planks that have been made into a makeshift platform. Two army soldiers, a captain and a sergeant from the Northern Army are surrounding him. Farquhar observes the forest scene around him and takes in the army on the banks of the bridge while the men around him move to their final positions. Awaiting the captain's signal, the sergeant is about to step away to let Farquhar drop. Farquhar tries to stare into the water swirling below. He watches some driftwood get carried away by the slow water. He shuts his eyes to push away any visual distractions and tries to think of his family. He gets distracting by a ringing metal tone that seems to bang constantly, but slower and slower. Farquhar opens his eyes and tries to imagine himself freeing his hand and swimming away down the river to his family. These thoughts are barely realised before the captain nods and the sergeant steps off of the board.
