Toby leads them to a jetty on the Thames where the trail fades away, leading the men to conclude that the villains escaped by boat. At that instant, the door to the boat rental home opens and a little boy runs out, followed by his mother. Holmes stops the child before he can run off, and asks the woman a few questions about renting a steam boat. The lady informs him that her husband has gone off in it, and she is a little worried, as he normally would have taken a different ship. She also lets out that he went off with a Wooden-legged man... Holmes asks a few more questions about this Wooden-legged man, and the boat they left in. As they leave, Holmes send a telegram to "The Baker Street Irregulars," the group of street rats that he employs to gather information. At home, they eat breakfast and read through the newspaper, where they find an article, praising the detective work of Athelney Jones. When the group of street rats arrive, Holmes tells them that they need to go down the river, looking for a steam ship called the "Aurora," and when they find it, they should come to him. Following this, Holmes plays Watson to sleep on his Violin.
