Good afternoon, Hoyas! It's Monday, September 1st, and welcome back to campus. Let's dive into the latest news and updates from Georgetown University. Today, we're enjoying mostly sunny skies with a comfortable high of 81 degrees. The pleasant weather is expected to continue throughout the week, making it perfect for outdoor activities. Georgetown has appointed Soyica Diggs Colbert, a 2001 alumna and the university's vice president for interdisciplinary initiatives, as interim provost. In her new role, Colbert will oversee academic affairs, ensuring the university's commitment to excellence in education and research. The university has unveiled a new hub for the humanities on the Hilltop campus. This dedicated space aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and support the Georgetown Humanities Initiative, enhancing the role of humanities in our academic community. A three-year sustainability project is underway on Healy and Copley Lawns. This initiative focuses on improving green spaces and promoting environmental stewardship on campus. Additionally, the Office of Sustainability and Residential Living have introduced 'In-Hall Sustainability Representatives' to advocate for eco-friendly practices within residence halls. Georgetown's McDonough School of Business has launched the Business of Health Initiative. This program aims to prepare leaders to tackle challenges in the healthcare industry by integrating business acumen with health sector insights. In January 2025, Georgetown opened the SFS Asia-Pacific campus in Jakarta, Indonesia. This marks the university's first campus in Indonesia, offering programs designed for policymakers in the U.S. and Southeast Asia. The Georgetown Hoyas men's basketball team, under second-year head coach Ed Cooley, concluded the 2024–25 season with an 18–16 record. The team participated in the inaugural College Basketball Crown tournament, reaching the quarterfinals before falling to Nebraska. Notably, players Thomas Sorber and Micah Peavy were selected in the NBA Draft, marking the first time since 2008 that two Hoyas were drafted in the same year. A group of approximately 29 current or recent students accessed unauthorized data containing sensitive academic information due to a system setting change. The university is addressing the issue to ensure data security and prevent future incidents. That's all for today's update. Stay informed, stay engaged, and let's make this semester a great one. Hoya Saxa!
