She holds a BA in English and teaching licensure in secondary Language Arts. However, after teaching in a breeze-block high school in the late 1980s, she decided she needed to be outside more often than not! She completed her MSc in Environmental Education for Sustainability and spent the next 20 years working for a UK non-profit as a Forest School leader facilitating outdoor learning and play for learners of all ages and abilities. She also trained teaching staff to become Forest School and outdoor learning and play facilitators, and consulted in developing school grounds for learning. In 2020, Angela completed her PhD study of young children’s participation in the classroom and in the woodlands, using ecological and developmental psychology theories for analysis. Angela McCombs, OTD Angie is the program director and senior lecturer at St. Ambrose University's Occupational Therapy program. Angie has been an occupational therapist for 17 years, primarily working with pediatrics across various settings. Her interest is in promoting social participation for children and youth within the community setting. Angie has completed trainings in outdoor learning environments from North Carolina State University and Outdoor Kids Occupational Therapy. Her bachelor's degree is in Health Sciences from Purdue University, and her clinical doctorate is from Washington University in St. Louis.…

Casey Fowler, DNP, ARNP, FNP-C, GS-C, FAANP Casey Fowler is a family nurse practitioner sub-specialized in geriatrics. He has been working with older adults in institutional and community-based settings for more than fifteen years. The last eight years, he has been leading other nursing professionals caring for this population, and he has been advancing his knowledge in leadership. Casey earned his Doctor of Nursing Practice from Gonzaga University in 2015, studying the use of nonpharmacologic interventions for behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia using the middle-range nursing theory of Person-Centred Care as described by McCormack and McCance. Casey has gone on to apply these principles to his leadership style, in what he calls person-centered leadership. Casey has been a speaker at many local, regional, and national events on a variety of topics, and this year, he was inducted into the Fellows of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners for his work building the first postgraduate fellowship for nurse practitioners to gain specialty training in geriatrics and complex adults as well as his work developing other leaders in his field. Luke has both commercialized and led initiatives that resulted in a 50% reduction in emergency department visits, improved patient and clinician satisfaction and delivered effective digital and virtual care at scale. Luke is certified in trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy and integrated primary care therapy. His clinical interests include ADHD, anxiety, and trauma recovery. Luke lives with his wife and daughter in central Illinois, where he enjoys endurance running, fishing, and bourbon outside of work. Sarah Oliver, PhD Sarah has nearly 30 years of experience in the social work field as a case manager and psychotherapist. She specializes in working with individuals who have experienced trauma. She earned her PhD in Clinical Social Work with a specialization in military and veterans issues and previously earned her MSW degree in Social Work from the University of Iowa. Sarah is the Director of Counseling at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, IA, and has worked with the college-age population for the last eight years. In addition, Sarah has a private practice where she sees Veterans and first responders who have experienced combat and other forms of trauma. Sarah is no stranger to Veterans or Veterans issues, having spent 17 years as a Clinical Social Worker for the Iowa City VA Health Care System. During this time Sarah had specialized experience providing care to Homeless and at-risk Veterans and providing psychotherapy to Veterans. She teaches dementia skills to nursing students in Virginia; at Longwood University and the University of Virginia. She began working with seniors and persons living with dementia in 2007 when she went to work in a nursing home. She initially worked as a nurse manager in skilled rehab and then developed a psychiatric services program where she was the mental health provider and dementia specialist for over 10 years. She also helped develop and manage a dementia care day program called the Meaningful Life Program for patients with advanced stages of dementia. In addition to teaching, she is also in private practice as a dementia care consultant. I am a graduate of the St. Ambrose University BSN nursing program. I had a few years of hospital and clinic experience before my son Mason was born. I am now my son's full-time home health nurse. He was born several months early and had a brain hemorrhage at birth, resulting in hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy, and other medical conditions. Mason is now 3.5 years old and requires full-time nursing care to provide feeding tube support, meds, and mobility assistance. He's had six brain surgeries, spine surgery, and others. I was fortunate to be hired for Mason's home health case, so I can be one of several nurses providing care for him. I feel that I have a unique experience from having a healthcare background and now being on the receiving end of the medical system in a complex way. I believe that because of my experience, I am better able to advocate for my child, as well as make sure the system around him is functioning as it should be. As most of us know, we have a long way to go as a collective society for optimizing healthcare for people with disabilities. My goal is to continue to advocate for the best care, safety, and accessibility for those with disabilities and their support systems." Kevin Sullivan: "My name is Kevin Sullivan, but feel free to call me Kev. I’m just an average guy, or at least I try to be as much as possible. I'm the youngest of three children and also the only member of both my immediate and extended families to be born with a permanent physical disability. I was born in a suburb outside Chicago with a condition known as Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita, or AMC for short. My condition causes abnormal fibrosis of my muscle tissue, which results in general weakness and limited range of motion in both my arms and legs. While my condition is both permanent and irreversible, AMC is neither a degenerative nor genetic condition. My life expectancy also will not be affected. I was born in the early 1990s, less than a year after the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law. My right to participate in everyday life alongside my able-bodied peers was codified into law at just the right time. As a part of the first generation of Americans living with disabilities having these rights guaranteed from birth, I've experienced both the successes and the shortcomings of this legislation. Kylie always had a passion for working with the older adult population and now enjoys continuing to learn and teach others about various aging topics. Haley Flenker is the Memory Care Director at Senior Star at Elmore Place. She is a graduate of Iowa State University with a degree in Family & Consumer Sciences and a minor in Gerontology. Jill Venden grew up in Davenport, Iowa, graduating from Palmer College of Chiropractic as a Doctor of Chiropractic in June 1996. While starting a practice in Davenport, Jill took on a part-time job as an adjunct instructor at a local college. This is when the education bug bit her, and she remained in higher education for 15 years, ranging from an adjunct instructor, to Program Chair, Academic Director, and finally Assistant Director of Education. While her career in education ended in the fall of 2017, Jill states she was fortunate to find her current position as a Volunteer Coordinator at Compassus where she is able to utilize her teaching skills, healthcare background, and her passion to help others. She has been a Speech-Language Pathologist for three years and currently works specifically in pediatric therapy with Genesis Outpatient Pediatric Therapy. Megan returned to her home in the Quad Cities after spending two years in Des Moines. She and her husband enjoy time with their two dogs, and in their free time, they enjoy spending time with family, renovating their home, and experiencing finding good local restaurants. Currently, she is working as a Technical Advisor on a PEPFAR-funded, CDC-supported HIV Prevention, Care, and Treatment Project being implemented by the Zimbabwe Association of Church-related Hospitals (ZACH), a Zimbabwean NGO that works with church-related hospitals and Clinics in Zimbabwe. Tsitsi Monera-Penduka, PhD, AAHIVP: Tsitsi Monera-Penduka is a Clinical Pharmacologist from Zimbabwe who recently relocated to the United Kingdom. She has worked mainly in academia, conducting research, and training healthcare professional students in HIV. Dr Monera-Penduka established the Research Unit For Safety Of Herbs And Drugs (RUSHeD), which focuses on developing clinical evidence for the safe integration of herbal and conventional medicine in HIV care settings. She has been involved in the implementation of several inter-professional education and training initiatives that promote patient-centred care, including the Strengthening Inter-professional Education for HIV (STRIPE HIV), Collaborative Inter-professional Partnership CHIP) and the Global Educational exchange in Medicine (GEMx) initiatives. Jessica Posner, MPH: Jessica Posner is the Strategic Information Lead with John Snow Inc.'s Center for HIV and Infectious Disease, who has twenty years of experience in a range of global health technical areas. She currently leads JS Inc.'s Person-Centered Care Portfolio. Host Ann Garton welcomes Lynne Miller, Kamie Montoya and Angela Kight to discuss brain health in school age children on this edition of the "Institute For Person-Centered Care Podcast." Lynne Miller is currently the Training/Burnout Specialist at Vera French Community Mental Health Center. Lynne has been employed at Vera French (VF) for 12 years and works with adults with chronic mental illness at the VF residential facilities and VF Habilitation Group Homes. She also works with children who are experiencing some kind of grief, loss or trauma at VF Rick’s House of Hope. Rick’s House of Hope’s mission is to ensure the needs of children who are experiencing grief, loss or trauma are not overlooked. Prior to working at Vera French, Lynne worked for Bettendorf Community Schools in the Elementary Special Education Department with children with mental health challenges. She has also worked at Wittenmyer Youth Center, which is a residential treatment center for youth who were adjudicated by the courts as children in need of assistance or delinquency. Lynne is a graduate of the University of Iowa as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist and a certified Youth Mental Health First Aid Instructor. Lynne believes it takes a village to raise children to be resilient and healthy. Kamie Montoya is currently a Principal at Jefferson Elementary in the Davenport Community School District. She was born and raised in Davenport and a product of the Davenport Community Schools. During her educational experience at Kirkwood Community College she decided she wanted to go into education to help change the lives of children and shape our future. Kamie is an alumni of The University of Iowa with degrees in Elementary Education and Special Education – Multi-Categorical Resource. She worked at an after school program for at risk youth with extreme behavior disorders and found her life's calling through helping those children. She volunteered at Tanager Place in Cedar Rapids and confirmed her love for working with at risk youth. Right out of college, she went on to become a 6-8 Special Education Teacher at Smart Intermediate School. After serving in that position for several years, she went on to teach 6th Grade Language Arts. During this time she went back to school to obtain her Master's Degree in Teaching and Leadership from St. Ambrose University all while coaching volleyball and basketball each year. She then went on to become a crisis interventionist, instructional coach, and then SAM (School Administrative Manager) at Smart Intermediate School. She then realized she wanted to do more and hoped to help larger number of kids in our community so she went back to get a second Master's Degree in Administration and Special Education Supervision from St. Xavier University. Mrs. Montoya is also The Vice President of Philanthropy for The Batting for Kids Non- Profit Organization as she has a wonderful group of friends that has decided to put their time and effort to the cause that is near and dear to her heart- helping the kids and families in our community - one family- one generation at a time! Angela Kight is currently a Peer Support Supervisor with Vera French’s Integrated Health Program. Angela was born and raised in the QCA and is glad to support accessibility of quality care and services. Her Bachelor of Science in Health Services and current role allows her to implement and support the philosophy of applying services in treating the whole person. Her direct public health practice in Cameroon focused on HIV prevention, maternal and child health, malaria, and nutrition. Kate holds a master’s degree in Education with a concentration in Language, Culture and Education and TESOL Certification from Western Illinois University. We also welcome Duk Kim, PhD, a Professor in St. Ambrose University’s Political Science Department. He teaches political science and international studies focusing on methodological approaches to examine post-conflict management roles of the United Nations and humanitarian NGOs for war-torn societies.
