The anti-racism counter protest at Vancouver City Hall on August 19, 2017. The event was arranged by local ad-hoc team Stand Up to Racism Metro Vancouver and over 4,000 attendees. Anti-white supremacy protests were held in several cities in response to a car ploughing into a group of activists who were preparing to march in opposition to a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville. Really though, Charlottesville did not happen in a vacuum. While Charlottesville was a rude awakening for many, we cannot speak out, act, or vote accordingly only at violent flashpoints like this. It is the subtle, daily white supremacy that must be eliminated, not just today but years ago and years from now. “…It is imperative to confront, unsettle, disrupt, show up, speak up, and speak out. It is not okay to be silent. It is not okay to be apathetic. Dismantling white supremacy has to be the work of white people.”
