Ulf Karlson Sensei of Kishiomoto Di, a pragmatic proponent of Bunkai and the merits of diving deep into your chosen art. He travels to Okinawa regularly, speaks Japanese and teaches and trains whilst on Island. He hesitates to describe himself as a researcher but he has a deep hard won knowledge of the arts and an appreciation for the history and culture of the art. In Part 2 of 2 we continue our conversation with Ulf Sensei, we start with Josh giving some reflections of Ulf Sensei's unique approach to Kata and we get into some interesting places regarding Kata and indeed Karate in general. We are joined by Josh Simmers Sensei of the Okinawa Karate Podcast who very kindly agreed to co-host this discussion and he also organised the venue and times. Big thanks to James Pankiewicz Sensei for allowing the recording to be done at the world famous Asato Dojo! The inkblot test, overlaying your own perception onto a given form, some call it paradolia, our host apparently calls it Bunkai! We look at differing attitudes and approaches to Bunkai and the idea of doing away with certain "Golden Idol" ideas, and a shout out to fellow traveller on the path Les Bubka Sensei. The importance of pedigree of experience and how lineage can be weaponised to exclude any ideas that do not support the "dear leader" mentality! Politics in the Martial arts is a given, but why does it feel like an ugly divorce when "Mummy" and "Daddy" decide to call it quits? Why do words like honour and respect feature so highly in those glossy brochures? When in fact these paragons of Martial virtue act like anything but? Kristian Mahinay is one of those Martial Artist's who approaches his study from the perspective of a lifestyle, he has some excellent and motivational content on his Instagram channel, and see's himself as very much a student. His studies of Both Uechi Ryu & Kobudo have created a desire to encourage others to find their path. He studies and teaches at shokenkarate.com in Alberta Canada. In the 3rd and final part of this conversation Kristian Senpai relates why he has whiped the "board clean" and devoted his most recent study to Sanchin Kata and the impact that has had on his Karate. He relates with affection valuable lessons imparted by his Sensei and the open minded approach that has led him to look deeply at the roots of his art. Finally we ask whats the thing you would most like to say to all those in the arts? What do drawings of WW2 aircraft, a dinner with a Friend, and childhood rivalries have to do with Martial Arts intellectual property, and the cult mentality? Even I'm not sure, and I recorded it. Let's take the ride, and see if I can sew this stuff together and end up making some sense! At the very least you can watch my ADHD take the wheel for almost 20 minutes! Shihan Yoko Okamoto, was interviewed some years ago on the Aikido Brasil YouTube page the link to which is below: https://youtu.be/urt2JYHArmc?si=txjdPB0gs3Fy-a_c I have never had the honour of training with this great Sensei, and in fact we have never interacted in any way shape or form. However I find myself revisiting this particular interview on a regular basis and it forms part of a motivational playlist that I have collected over the years privately. It’s important to find ways to maintain our passion and desire to continue on the path. So in this podcast we discuss that interview and look at ways that an Aikido Sensei i have never met continues to inspire my own training, and we look at ways of creating your personal motivational playlist, inspiration is sometimes something we create. This episode is based 100% based on an excellent discussion on Sensei LesBubka’s “Anxious Blackbelt” podcast, the link of which is below. Their discussion asked the question “How many Kata is to many Kata?” Les Bubka & Dr John Tichens https://open.spotify.com/episode/5i5UuC1SBhpqdPug4UX23p?si=e016abe26daf4dbc In this episode our host asks, the same question with a couple of extra (and hopefully relevant) tangents. For some having a Dojo and students is the literal and most worthy goal. So in this one we will talk about why closing my Dojo was both a difficult thing, and a much needed step into the next stage of training. The value of lessons learnt on the way with all those who came through the doors can't be put into words. And how its the start of a new chapter or the resumption of an old one. Have a listen and you decide. https://linktr.ee/Invisen Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices…
How do we live up to long dead masters? How do we seperate Myth from reality, how accurate can we be? Is it even worth trying?
