Today I speak to photographer, film maker, author and philosopher Sean Tucker about his new book The Meaning in The Making (The How and Why Behind Our Human Need to Create) We all like to make stuff and there is nothing like the satisfaction of sitting back and admiring something that we have just completed. But sometimes we don't sit back and admire it, often it can be a struggle, and it often doesn't go to plan. Often we will suffer from perfectionism and not see the inherent beauty and meaning in the creative process. However that doesn't mean to say that meaning is not there. And that's what todays episode is about. In my conversation with Sean. How a chance opportunity to take some time out in Snowdonia to make a video documentary gave him the necessary space to share how he got stuff more wrong than right with people The way in which cataloguing the ups and downs of his creative journey resonated with people. Why building some space away from our normal environment is essential to recharge our creative batteries and inspiration How creating things enables us to sculpt, mould, hammer and document order from the chaos of the world Why perfectionism holds some people back from just putting work out into the world for others to see and the power of trial and error

Today I’m joined by Fitness, Health, Positivity and Habits Coach, not to mention Poker player Tyler Todt. You’ve probably witnesses how social media has become a cess pool of negativity, hysteria and infamous individuals over the last few years. Often such individuals make the most noise and get the most negative attention than anyone else as they put on their social media mask. Which is why when someone comes a long who is an antidote to all of that it’s super refreshing – well it is to me at least. Expect to hear: How one of the biggest gut checks for him was having loads of money and his 1st marriage falling apart. How concentrating on what you really value (instead of what you think you should value) is a game changer. The life changing experience him and his wife had fostering and later adopting two of their three kids, and the challenges of his wife’s first pregnancy. How he does a self audit once a month covering the most important areas of his life. Today I am joined by Heart Surgeon, Medical Director of Ovadia Heart Health and author of the book “Stay of My Operating table” Dr Philip Ovadia As some of you know I lost my dad after he had two strokes back in 2015 and have a family history of heart disease – there is a good chance your story may be similar to mine. I found good information on diet and health difficult to come by, the advice from my GP “brief” to say the least, and a ton of conflicting information. Which is why for some years now I’ve been keen to speak with a heart surgeon. There is a ton of useful info in todays episode Expect to hear: How many of the people that he operates on actually have low cholesterol. Why much of the information he learned during medical school has proved to be wrong. The truth around highly processed seed oils we've been advised to eat. How it makes no sense to him that foods we have eaten for 99.9% of our existence are suddenly bad for us. The measures of metabolic health you should focus on to reduce risk of heart disease A simple test you can have done to indicate whether you are in fact developing heart disease right now. On todays episode I’m delighted to be joined by psychologist, licenced marriage and family therapist, and attachment specialist Adam Lane Smith, to talk about his specialist area of expertise which is fixing your attachment style. Adam came up on my radar because quite frankly I couldn’t ignore him as he was everywhere online and his wisdom and knowledge on relationship dynamics and attachment are second to none. Put simply he breaks this stuff down in very simple terms and is helping tons of people in doing so. Expect to hear: Why the idea that attachment style is fixed in stone and cannot be changed is false. Why knowing the exact steps to take in healing your broken attachment style and the order in which to take them is key. How avoidant and anxious attachment plays out in relationships (you might recognise yourself here). The importance of having a state of the union discussion about your marriage on a regular basis. On todays episode I welcome back friend of the podcast and buddy of mine from across the pond - Zac Small. Zac runs a brotherhood for men in the US – Fraternity of Excellence and he also pens The Family Alpha Blog. He is a real champion of male empowerment and men showing up as the best men, husbands, fathers and community leaders they can. But the reason this episode is powerful is that I recorded it just under a year ago, before I took a break from the podcast, and in the aftermath of a pretty bumpy time for us as a family when my eldest daughter was going through some mental health challenges. So what you are going to get today is some real honest and frank conversation from the coal face of life. Uncut no holds barred. Expect to hear: The importance of sharing the story of what you have been through and what you have learned (even when it’s painful to do so) Why seeking out other likeminded men when we realise we need to save ourselves is powerful step towards triumphing through adversity How challenges and setbacks in life are part of you and not some dirty little secret. How struggling doesn’t make you a bad man or a bad dad, it simply makes you a human being. Which is why our operating system struggles from time to time. Expect to hear: How small scale societies made it far simpler for people to get their seven basic needs met The difference between self actualisation and living a meaningful life Why caring for others and strong relationships are central to meaning How not everything that is natural is necessarily good for you or society Find out more about Doug and Dave on Twitter, the Arizona State University Website, check out Doug's blog on Psychology today Sex, Murder and the Meaning of Life , and Dave's Podcast called Zombified. A recent poll discovered that only 15% of people are fully engaged with work with 85% of people unhappy in their jobs. Ken walked the path to escape this predicament and in our conversation we lift the lid on exactly what he learned and what he has taught to 1000’s of others in the same position. Expect to hear: Why young people are encouraged to pursue “safe professions” instead of harnessing their wonder and imagination. How men have traded provision for purpose. Why you don’t have to go all in and leave your day job as some so called experts claim is the only way. On todays episode I am joined by writer, philosopher plus Senior Editor of the new magazine Compact, along with author of the book What Do Men Want? Nina Power. Never before has the the spotlight been on men in the way it currently is. What we do, what we don't do, how we behave. A picture is being painted about how the average man acts and thinks but does this ring true with reality? What do men have to say about this? I discuss with Nina just where we go from here and what the future holds for relations between men and women. We delve into: How Nina was inspired to write the book because of the growing divisions in society between men and women that didn't ring true with her reality. The way in which contemporary feminism isn't anything like the feminism she grew up with in the 90's. Why people are encouraged to put labels on men right now and how the fear around men isn't based in reality. The feminisation of society into a 'mean girls' environment where traditional masculine things are scoffed at. Today I am joined by mentor, parenting blogger and coach along with founder of Peaceful Fathers - Anthony Migliorino . There has over the last few decades been seismic shifts in just how we parent our children, leading some of us to question whether the way we were taught is actually the right way. Caught between being to liberal on the one hand and overly authoritarian on the other parents are beginning to ask if there is another way. On my conversation with Anthony we delve into: How he discovered peaceful parenting 20 years ago and why the non-aggression principle revolutionised his parenting. The differences between authoritative parenting and permissive parenting and why both of these types of parenting are abusive in different ways. Why using fear as a method of control means that when children grow into adulthood this will be normalised as a way others can influence their behaviour. They hypocrisy around parents telling children not to hit and how they then go to use violence as a means to compliance. Why focussing on what you kids to right rather than criticising and nit picking all the time grows their confidence. 🔥 If you want to join the Guild of Dads 🤝 you can do so via our Facebook Group 🔥 To grab a FREE copy of my e-book 📖 The Dad Blueprint click here 🔥 To buy me a Coffee ☕ click here Get involved and find out more To get involved with the conversation on social media we are on Facebook , Instagram & Twitter Episode show notes can be found on our website If you like what we are doing, leave a rating and review here…

In my conversation with Zac we discuss: The choice we have over what aspects of our own dads we want to retain or reject How we are the first generation to have one foot in the pre and post digital era's and why this impacts being a father Why society seems to want to disempower men right now rather than empowering them How life is short and we need to appreciate the present moment and the fact we might not be here tomorrow The challenge of how to engage men's problems as men naturally do, rather than approaching men as broken women.…
Today I talk about how we are called to things in life and what it requires of us. My guest today is bestselling author and host of the Veteran State of Mind Podcast, along with Iraq and Afghanistan Vet - Geraint Jones There is an old saying along the lines of "oh they were an overnight success" except what people don't often see is the many years before hand that it took to get to that point. Some of us are called to something from an early age and others find their calling later in life. On todays episode Geraint and I discuss: His childhood fascination with books being one of the last of the pre-digital generation. The rituals he gets into so he can get into the writing zone daily. Why being in Iraq and Afghanistan gave him a rich tapestry of life events from which to draw inspiration. The importance of being able to put in the reps day in, day out in order to achieve mastery. Self defeating thoughts we all feel when trying to achieve something difficult and the nature of "off days".…
Today I am joined by two friend (and also Dads) from South East London who liked listening to podcasts, and liked talking so decided to start their own podcast called Dad's What I'm Talking About - Nathan and Bobby. One of the most popular misconceptions leveled at men is that they don't talk about how the feel. The reality is that many men do, they just do it in a different way to women and when you get two men together they can wax lyrical on a number of subjects - indeed this episode is testament to that. We delve into: How the mainstream media has become so sanitized that podcasts and new media are giving people just what they want right now. Why specific podcasts that empower people are very counter to the victimhood narrative parroted in the mainstream media. Role models and how our children will earn money in the future very differently to us. The importance of going on adventures with our children that they will remember. Why some parents really need to grow up and stop being chadults. 🔥 If you want to join the Guild of Dads 🤝 you can do so via our Facebook Group 🔥 To grab a FREE copy of my e-book 📖 The Dad Blueprint click here 🔥 To buy me a Coffee ☕ click here Get involved and find out more To get involved with the conversation on social media we are on Facebook , Instagram & Twitter Episode show notes can be found on our website If you like what we are doing, leave a rating and review here…
Today I speak to Chartered Psychologist and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, Honorary Lecturer in Psychology at University College London, Clinical Hypnotherapist and author of The Book Perspectives in Male Psychology – John Barry PhD. With mental health and specifically male mental health under the spotlight like never before its a hot topic of discussion. Rates of male suicide are still high and the challenge of how to address mental health problems in men prevail. But what if we were to take a different and unique approach as to how we address the difficulties men face? One that is specific to the needs of men? John and I discuss: How men's studies and social reconstructionists view masculinity as a social construct that needs "fixing" rather than embracing the inherent and unique differences in men. Why men are drawn towards methods of therapy that are more solution based and rational rather than going continuously over their feelings. The problem of psychologists trying to blame and train masculinity out of men. Gamma Bias and how it highlights the accolades of women whilst ignoring the same achievements of men. The massive importance of valuing dads, their involvement in a child's upbringing and the benefits of mum and dad being present in a child's upbringing.…
Today I speak to Founder of Cultivating Minds UK, leadership and violence prevention trainer, former Chief Inspector in the Scottish Police force and member of the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit - Graham Goulden. With recent well publicised cases of violence against women in the news and also cases of violence being perpetrated by members of police forces on both sides of the Atlantic, right now it's never been such a topical subject. How as a society we being to challenge the behaviour of individuals within our institutions, organisations and even peer groups in the future is a challenge that needs to be taken up. Graham and I discuss: How the cases of Sarah Everard and George Floyd have really case a light on police forces but also how organisations allow attitudes to take hold. The importance of men being reflective about their own behaviour and their behaviour in the past How all men can set an example, be a role model and set the tone for masculinity. Why building character in young men is so important and the strength of building a personal brand for young men to live by. The destructive influence of imaginary peers in how boys shape their behaviour towards girls.…
Today I speak to Resilience & Breathwork Coach, Expert in Humanising Our Emotions, Speaker & Trainer, Josh Connolly. One of the biggest questions in mental health after stuff like "it's good to talk", "just talk about it", is the reality of what comes next. This is the part when most people really need to face down some difficult truths about themselves and begin to go on a journey, equipping themselves with the tools to move forward. In my conversation with Josh we discuss: How Josh struggled for a lot of his life by adopting the tough guy persona which led to him considering taking his own life. The manner in which we simply don't teach our kids as a society how to be comfortable with experiencing the full range of sometimes difficult emotions. Why being the best Dad means being comfortable with our own full range of emotions when we are with them. The ability and awareness to 'reflect and correct' situations where we haven't shown up as the Dad and Husband we want to be. The importance of having other men in your life, getting people who will hold you accountable and having a daily self care routine.

Today I am joined by coach, entrepreneur, father to teenage boys and host of the Midlife Male Podcast - Greg Scheinman One of the things that has become popularised of late is the notion of the "dad bod". Some celebrate as a badge of honour that comes with parent, some endorse it as part of the body acceptance movement but some organisations use it as a marketing ploy. But what about the long term chronic health implications for a generation of men in their prime? I discuss with Greg Just how organisations, influencers and those in the public look closely at the kind of lifestyle behaviours we want to reward How Greg and I share the experience of having lost a relative to chronic disease and why this shapes how we look at the "dad bod" discussion. Why caring for your body is so much more than just aesthetics and really is a health and longevity issue. How many men want to break out, do better and fall into the trap of life just happening to them The challenges and skills he uses to bring up boys in a culture where masculinity is under attack from some quarters. 🔥 If you want to join the Guild of Dads 🤝 you can do so via our Facebook Group 🔥 To grab a FREE copy of my e-book 📖 The Dad Blueprint click here 🔥 To buy me a Coffee ☕ click here Get involved and find out more To get involved with the conversation on social media we are on Facebook , Instagram & Twitter Episode show notes can be found on our website If you like what we are doing, leave a rating and review here…
Today I speak to photographer, film maker, author and philosopher Sean Tucker about his new book The Meaning in The Making (The How and Why Behind Our Human Need to Create) We all like to make stuff and there is nothing like the satisfaction of sitting back and admiring something that we have just completed. Why building some space away from our normal environment is essential to recharge our creative batteries and inspiration How creating things enables us to sculpt, mould, hammer and document order from the chaos of the world Why perfectionism holds some people back from just putting work out into the world for others to see and the power of trial and error…
Today I speak to creator of a new 6 month peer-led learning programme called 'Father Figures' and philosopher Sam Weatherald Feminism isn't anything new and in the past 100 years we have seen it evolve through 4 distinct waves around the central theme that women should have the same rights and opportunities as men. However their are divisions within feminism itself as to where it is now headed, and as it becomes swept up in social reconstructionist ideology many are asking exactly where it is going, and what does it mean for Men, Dads and the Family? In my conversation with Sam we discuss: The different groups that exist within feminism and how they are not all on the same page as to the future direction of the movement Why men feel that feminism has begun to overstep it's original remit when it comes to directing men as to how they should behave How Sam sees feminism as very much behind the notion of a strong masculine father presenceand the benefits of it. Whether the idea of patriarchy is actually valid in 2021 How in the Modern West, many of the issues feminism is fighting against no longer exist…
Today I speak to author of the book “The Hungry Brain" , an expert in neurodegenerative disease and the neuroscience of body fatness, obesity and eating behaviour, Stephan J Guyenet PhD We all love food - lets admit it but for many of us life is a constant battle of staying fit and healthy at the same time as enjoying the foods we really like in moderation. Which is easier said than done given the sheer variety and amount of different foods available today at the dial of the phone or click of a mouse. But why can't we control our urge to eat, and where does this come from? In my conversation with Stephan we discuss: How energy is the key driver of human survival and why the human brain is inbuilt with systems that control how we go about getting the energy to survive Why in evolutionary terms the threat of getting not enough energy was greater than the threat of getting too much food. The way we are hardwired to acquire rather than expend energy How specific foods are more habit forming and addictive than others and why the food industry engineers them to be that way. Why Stephan believes that the obesity epidemic has gone so far in some countries that state intervention may be the only answer to curb this.…
Today I speak to Dad of twins Shaun (AKA Knackered Knackers) who is a man who has been on a remarkable journey of fertility and who is sharing his experience with other men to make a difference to the lives of others through sharing the trials and tribulations of male fertility. We all assume that we will be able to conceive naturally when the time comes for but 1000's of men and women all over the world, what should be a simple biological event can't take place for whatever reason. What follows is a journey of ups, downs, highs and lows that most of us with kids can't imagine. In my conversation with Shaun we discuss: How catching mumps when he was younger meant he went through much of his adult life completely oblivious to the the impact it would later have on his fertility. The painful procedures both he and his wife had to go through in order to detect whether he still had any fertility at all and his wife then having to have fertility treatment. The grieving process he went through as he came to terms with being infertile but the way in which he began to see life differently through the simple act of surrendering to what had happened. How the ups and downs of the experience have shaped the man he has now become and why it's so important to him to help other men in the same position as he was go through the process. Why there is so little help for men going through infertility and the manner in which life changing medical news is broken to us.…

For parents in general whether their kids are getting enough sleep is one of their main concerns. For some parents just getting your kids to sleep at all is the biggest frustration So on todays conversation we tackle some of the fact and fiction around this subject head on In my conversation with Lyndsey we discuss: Why the over abundance of information around child development, psychology and attachment is causing a massive amount of overwhelm amongst parents The theory of supercharging your child's love tank by maximising short periods of time with them How the idea of 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. sleeping is unrealistic and setting parents up for failure The actual amount of wind down time that your kids need before bed (along with the when you should put in the fun time) The amount of external and internal factors which effect the family unit daily and how they impact everything, including everyone's sleep…

My guest today is keynote speaker, bestselling author of the book The End to Procrastination and founder and CEO of Procrastination.com – Peter Ludwig. One of the most frustrating things for most people is making a start on something and today more than ever there are a ton of things that we can use to distract us from focussing on what is truly important to us. As a consequence we jump, flit and never fully focus in order to reach our true potential.
