We continue on the journey of the Passion. Reflecting on how the media portrays it and our own ability to witness suffering.

"Another aspect of the Gethsemane image that it emphasizes the fact that suffering is a crucial part of the process. The important part is to accept the suffering one encounters. You know we all have the deeply ingrained infantile notion that we’re supposed to be happy. That’s not true. We are supposed to suffer. If you attach any psychological credence to what I’m describing as a Christian archetype, if it has any general validity, can you escape the conclusion that is implied that we’re supposed to suffer?"

--Edward Edinger, The Christian archetype : a Jungian commentary on the life of Christ

"For many centuries the west, under Byzantine influence, represented Christ himself alive and open-eyed, a triumphant Savior wearing a royal crown. In the 11th Century there appeared a new type, the emaciated figure with its head fallen on one shoulder and, later, wearing the crown of thorns. This version prevailed in western art thereafter."
