Nearly every American remembers what they were doing on that fateful day of 9/11. But the terrorist attack on our nation profoundly impacted those who serve in our military. We are joined by MSG Chris Spence, US Army (Ret.), who was part of an elite Army Green Beret unit that covertly entered Afghanistan one month after the 9/11 attacks. The actions of the Special Forces team Spence served with are portrayed in a book and film, "12 Strong," starring Chris Hemsworth, from the book "Horse Soldiers” by Doug Stanton. Spence captured the famous viral photo used by former Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld, to show the world that American Special Forces were on the ground in Afghanistan and on horseback. The close-up picture he took of a Horse Soldier is currently on display in the Smithsonian Institute and served as the template for “America’s Response Monument,” or Horse Soldier Statue, which overlooks the 9/11 Memorial. Join us to explore the stories of real-life heroes, learn what it was like going in on horseback into Afghanistan, the tough challenges they encountered in battling terrorism, and see how they overcame them. Guest Bio Chris Spence, who lives in Tennessee, was in the Army for 25 years and has three sons. He is Operations Director at Leader Solutions & Decision Support, focused on leadership and teamwork. Spence is also the Program Director for the 5th Special Forces Scholarship Fund, which gives scholarships to children of Special Forces and support soldiers. Additionally, he works with UNIT Solutions, which offers non-lethal training systems for law enforcement and the military.
