On this episode of the Mechanics of Transportation, I’m diving into my archives to flesh out and share a story I did for a public radio station in Richmond. It was about the history of Three Chopt / Three Notch’d road, which runs from Charlottesville down to Richmond.
But for this week’s podcast, we’re concentrating on just the Richmond portion because it’s so interesting. When I was doing this story, I got to go checkout the Valentine museum in downtown–a great place filled with really cool Richmond-specific artifacts and information.
I met City Historian Jacqueline Drayer, who at the time was still pretty new to her job. We talk about how it has one of America’s earliest streetcar systems and how the road changed over the decades and how segregation affected travel for Richmonders.
