Ok Missing Chapter fans, how many of you enjoy participating in and watching sports? If you’re a sports fan, like the Phils here, then you can sit down at the end of a work day and decompress by watching your favorite team, or watch a random game with a random team just because of the entertainment value. What is it that draws us in? How is it that I can watch the OIympics till the middle of the night without blinking an eyelash, with a sport that I’ve never heard of before? I think it’s because as former athletes, we appreciate and are amazed at the time, dedication, and practicing profound skill sets that athletes of all shapes and sizes are willing to put their bodies through in order to pursue perfection. It’s unbelievable what the human body is capable of if we’re willing to be disciplined and endure the painful grind of practicing a skill day in and day out. And that’s the idea for today’s episode. Someone who history has already forgotten, but someone who, by doing daily activities by trade, became one of the most elite athletes and in one of the most obscure ways, became legendary. Well we haven’t forgotten him, and oh, we haven’t forgotten our coffee either. So turn up the volumes, get a couple more reps on your treadmills, and try to keep up with today’s Missing Chapter Profile. His life is remarkable enough to be considered for an episode of the Missing Chapter Podcast. His innate ability to cheat death can only be rivaled by a figure in history like a Gregory Rasputin. As a child, it’s reported, that he survived a fall of some three-stories, he drank acidic water that he mistook for milk, swallowed a rather large needle, was hit on the head by a large stone, suffered severe burns from a gunpowder explosion, fell into a river and nearly drowned, and, yes, went on to invent one of the most significant, popular musical instruments the world has ever seen…. Phew. Oh, and we haven’t even gotten to his invention that changed the world’s culture like no one could have predicted! Quite the list and quite the life on the podcast you’ve come to expect these incredible stories from. Settle in with your favorite cup of coffee and maybe turn on a little light jazz music in the background as we play another melody, here on the Missing Chapter. Have you ever had an idea that in your mind sounds great, but in reality, the execution doesn’t really pan out successfully? I think we’ve all been there. Take out an ingredient in a recipe, and exchange it for what you think would be an upgrade…turns out to be the most vile thing you’ve ever tasted. A shortcut that makes sense in your head, but ends up adding double the time and three times the frustration. Or how about a gentleman at the beginning of WWI that had an incredibly innovative idea for a new weapon…the difference being that from the onset, any outsider on planet earth would be able to tell that this is not a good idea at all. But let’s talk about that idea, let’s put our heads together and see if we can analyze this till our heads hurt, and then once the headache comes on, drink some more coffee. Welcome to the MC Podcast, everyone, let’s get started. Go to The Missing Chapter Podcast website for more information, previous episodes, and professional development opportunities!…
Have you ever skipped stones before? You know, going to a body of water, finding the flattest stones you can gather, and side-arming the disc shaped rocks like you’re an MLB submarine pitcher. I don’t know about you, but my goal was always 3, let’s see if we can skip it 3 times in a row. Anything under that, failure, anything over that, celebration. I guess that’s what you did before the advent of technology and cell phones, but this idea is actually the concept of this episode. How you might be asking? Well, the skipping stones concept was not only a concept, it was a viable military strategy in WWII by the British Air Force. Yup, you heard me right. And you’re about to hear the coffee pour, because it’s that time again, and it’s time to get started. It’s almost that time again, everyone - warm weather, the glowing orb in the sky is back, no more gray all day, and one of the go-to’s for cooling down on a hot, summer day - ice cream. You can have ice cream all year round, right? But can you have soft serve all year round in upstate NY? I guess, but it’s just not the same. In our household, soft serve is reserved for summer months only. Like a good iced coffee for my MC colleague over here, summer only. Well, my excitement for this summer dairy delight got me thinking…where does one of the most popular summer desserts originate? Oh, don’t you dare go to google, go to the Phils on the Missing Chapter Podcast. Grab your coffees everyone, it’s time for another episode of the MC. Everyone loves a good magic trick. My kids love showing me card tricks, coin tricks, and my favorite, the bippity boppity boo magic wand tricks that makes something appear or disappear. If only we could do that in real life right? Well, in 1915, a group of Allied forces kind of did. In a brilliant evacuation plan, or in this sense, disappearing act, a group of Australian soldiers disappeared before the enemy’s eyes, and without a magic wand I might add. How did they do it? And was it fully successful? Why don’t you pour yourself a nice cup of joe, turn your volume up, and find out. Welcome to the MC, everyone, let’s get started. For this episode of the Missing Chapter, we’re tapping into one of our new segments, the MC Profile. This individual, to be mentioned later, and hopefully identified by my co-host and our listeners, is a normal, everyday kind of man who had an affinity for activity, fun, and thinking outside the box. His life story is filled with unbelievable obstacles, only to be overcome by a strong will, supportive people around him, and an undying faith. He’s a sports guy, just like us, and he may know someone else that bares the same name that he does, a little guy by the name of Gym Nasium - You’ll see what I mean, and yeah, you’re probably going to need another coffee after that one, so pour that black gold into your MC mug and let’s get started. In February 1825, Samuel Morse, was painting in New York City, blissfully unaware of the tragic news that was about to befall him. At the age of 34, he was carrying out a $1000 commission to paint the Marquis de Lafayette, a returning American Revolutionary War hero, and life was going well. Little did Morse know, however, that his wife, Lucretia, had suffered a heart attack in their New Haven, Ct. home just days after giving birth to their third child, James. What should have been a time of joy was, instead, one of immense sorrow. Some of our veteran listeners of the Missing Chapter know a little something about us…the Phils love their 80s and 90s movies and sitcoms. We loved our Saturday morning cartoons, our Saved By The Bell routine, and our Fresh Prince of Bel Air rapping montage. My sisters, though, were addicted to one of the 90s shows that was a huge hit…Beverly Hills 90210. But it wasn’t referred to as the full title, it was always referred to as 90210…the zip code. And that brings me to this episode of the Missing Chapter. The inquiry into the origins, facts, and unknowns about the national zip code. Maybe listening in today will allow this message to deliver easier and faster, leaving us more time for conversation and coffee. Welcome to the Missing Chapter, everyone, let’s get started. On June 13, 1926, 26-year-old Gladys Baker brought her 2-week-old daughter, to the foster home of Ida and Wayne Bolender in Hawthorne, California. There was no sign of any father—officially unknown - though Baker would insist for years that it was a Hollywood Studios employee named Charles Stanley Gifford. The sad drop-off of an infant and the sudden and abrupt departure of her single mother, certainly not the beginning to a life that would become as fame-filled and seemingly glamorous as any in American history. Glamor… fame… luxury… sex appeal… all words that have come to embody the figure that today’s Missing Chapter Podcast profiles. When, the word that best describes her life is more accurately… tragic. So, refresh that coffee and settle in for the true-story of a red-carpet icon. Lights, camera, action… The Missing Chapter Podcast. You know what’s a real pain in the neck? Well, technically, a pain in your mouth? When you know you have to go to the dentist. It’s one of those necessary dreadful things that you know you HAVE to do, and no matter how often you go, it’s never really a good time, right? Thankfully, I have good dentists in my life, so I’m certainly blessed in that regard, which got me thinking…with all of my dental woes in my life, what would my time in the dentist chair be like if I wasn’t born in the 20th century with modern medicine? Ouch, yeah that thought alone makes my teeth hurt. Welcome to the Missing Chapter, let’s just get to the coffee pour…the sugarless, coffee pour. Famous author CS Lewis coined a phrase that really speaks volumes about our own society and culture, chronological snobbery - Lewis defines this chronological snobbery as “the uncritical acceptance of the intellectual climate of our own age and the assumption that whatever has gone out of date is on that count discredited. In other words, we think we’re the best generation and our technology and lifestyles are far superior to those that came before us. Ask any adolescent who listens to their parents or teachers try to keep up with the lingo these days and laughter will ensue - why? Because deep down, they’re suffering from chronological snobbery. And don’t think they’re the only one, we’ve all done it! And that certainly applies to how we view history. We look at some of the cultures that came before us and laugh - until we find something that challenges that thought - something that tells us that we’re not superior at all to those that came before us, as if our new, modern technology somehow makes us better. Well, a fairly recent discovery is challenging just that. I hope I don’t mess with our egos too much today, you might want to get a second, or third cup of coffee. Welcome to the Missing Chapter, everyone, let’s get to it. Go to The Missing Chapter Podcast website for more information, previous episodes, and professional development opportunities!…
