Learn when a refi saves money and how target-date funds work, including fees and when to pick a later fund year. What exactly is a target-date fund, and when should you move your date? How do you know if now is a good time to refinance a house? Hosts Sean Pyles and Elizabeth Ayoola discuss mortgage refinancing and target-date funds to help you understand how to quantify savings on a refi and how to set (and adjust) an age-appropriate retirement glide path. To kick off the episode, NerdWallet senior news writer Anna Helhoski joins with mortgages and student loans writer Kate Wood and mortgage reporter Holden Lewis to break down why refis are spiking even without fresh Federal Reserve cuts, who’s most likely to benefit right now, and how markets (not just the Fed) drive daily mortgage rate moves. They begin with a discussion of rate-and-term vs. cash-out refinancing, with tips and tricks on calculating your breakeven point, using the ~0.75 percentage-point rule-of-thumb for potential savings, and factoring in 2% to 6% closing costs and how long you’ll stay put. Then, investing Nerd June Sham joins Sean and Elizabeth to discuss target-date funds. They discuss how glide paths work (to vs. through retirement), when to push your target year if you’ll work longer, and how fees compare with index funds/ETFs, plus contribution frameworks (10% to 15% of income vs. the “80% replacement” rule) and why many hands-off investors value auto-rebalancing despite higher expense ratios. A listener case study (age 35, 2055 fund) highlights how to revisit your target date in the decade before retirement, how to read a fund’s glide path, and why staying invested and consistent often matters more than chasing perfect timing. One new aspect of addiction treatment that has become popular in recent years is the use of medically assisted treatment (also known as MAT). It is used to treat many substance use disorders as well as to prevent overdose. Due to the recent opioid epidemic, MAT is being used as an alternative to abstinence based recovery. MAT is primarily used for the treatment of addiction to opioids such as heroin and prescription pain relievers that contain opiates. In this episode, we’ll explore the effectiveness of Suboxone and other medically assisted treatment when treating substance use disorder. BlueCrest CEO Richie Hession joins Mark "the Shark" Bonanni, Regional VP of Business Development at BlueCrest, for a lighter topic this episode: exploring major milestones in recovery. What does it feel like to date in recovery? What about getting your first job in recovery? Or spending time with friends and family who still drink and use drugs? For many people in recovery, finding work, managing relationships, and juggling responsibilities to families and friends can be a major challenge when they are still learning to maintain their sobriety. Richie and Mark share their personal stories—from great advice that Mark received from his sponsor to Richie's journey on Wall Street—as examples of what to do (and what not to do) in early recovery.…
BlueCrest CEO Richie Hession joins Mark Bonanni, Regional VP of Business Development at BlueCrest, and John Kakowski, a former licensed pharmacist and sober living advocate, to discuss the role of medication-assisted treatment in addiction recovery. While many programs rely on drugs like Suboxone as the "gold standard" for opiate recovery, Richie, Mark, and John explore other alternatives and explain why Suboxone isn't a one-size-fits-all solution. It's easy to see medication-assisted treatment as a cure for addiction, but the team explains that no medication is truly effective at managing addictive behaviors without psychosocial support like 12-step programs, therapy, and counseling. Mental health, in particular, plays a vital role in managing addiction, and John shares his insights into supporting medication-assisted treatment with mental health counseling.…
It's a word that's entered our vocabulary thanks to TV programs and pop culture, but how much do you really know about interventions? BlueCrest CEO Richie Hession joins interventionist John Troche to talk about the truth behind successful—and not so successful—interventions in real life. John discusses the aspects of interventions that many people don't understand, such as carefully selecting participants and doing deep background research before setting up a meeting. He also highlights some of the unexpected complications that make interventions challenging, including tracking down a homeless loved one and persuading a client that they won't lose their dog if they enter treatment.…
The case of Emma Semler shocked the nation: how did two young women leave a third woman to overdose and die in a restaurant bathroom? And why did one of those women, Emma Semler, get charged as a drug dealer when she didn't sell drugs? BlueCrest CEO Richie Hession joins Stas Botsaris, Regional VP of Business Development at BlueCrest, to discuss his personal connection to the case. Stas, who was in a relationship with Emma, speaks about her deep remorse over her actions, her commitment to recovery and sobriety—including sponsorship of many others—and the way that addiction can short-circuit our sense of right and wrong. And Richie and Stas discuss how the aftereffects of Emma's trial could stop more people from seeking medical help for someone overdosing.…
