The moment AI stops being an impressive novelty and starts feeling like an existential threat is something everyone experiences differently. For us, it happened this week when we encountered Google's NotesLM—an AI system that creates startlingly human-like podcasts from your notes.
What makes this so unsettling isn't just the technology itself, but the implications. When an AI can communicate complex ideas in context, complete with natural banter and explanations that pass the Turing test, what does that mean for knowledge workers? The sobering realization: if this technology keeps advancing at its current pace, many of our jobs could vanish within five years.
Perhaps most troubling is the disconnect between how tech billionaires market AI and its obvious trajectory. When they claim these technologies are meant to "assist" rather than replace humans, we're calling bullshit. The future demands collective action from all wage workers—breaking down artificial divisions between white and blue collar—to ensure AI benefits humanity broadly rather than concentrating power with a technological elite. Have we finally reached the moment where we need to reconsider everything about how our economy functions? Listen and decide for yourself.
