Transplanted on episode 1 (60) of The Seeds of Transformation Podcast features Taylor, a 3-year simultaneous kidney and pancreas transplant recipient. Hear Taylor share her incredible journey—the highs, the challenges, and the transformation that has shaped life after receiving the gift of a second chance.

"Transplanted—because life after transplantation is more than survival. It’s about truly living." - Dr. Allma

Medical Terminology Explained:

👉🏾 GFR stands for Glomerular Filtration Rate. In short, it’s a key measure of how well your kidneys are filtering waste and extra fluid from your blood. It tells doctors how well your kidneys are working—higher GFR means better kidney function, while a low GFR can indicate kidney disease or impaired function.

👉🏾 A fistula is a surgically created connection between an artery and a vein, usually in the arm, used for hemodialysis. This connection makes the vein stronger and larger, so blood can flow quickly and easily for dialysis treatments. It’s considered the best long-term option because it has fewer complications and lasts longer.

👉🏾 A dialysis catheter is a soft tube inserted into a large vein, typically in the neck, chest, or groin, to provide temporary access to the bloodstream for hemodialysis. It’s often used when someone needs dialysis right away or while waiting for a more permanent option like a fistula or graft. It’s not ideal for long-term use because there’s a higher risk of infection.

👉🏾 Peritoneal dialysis is a type of dialysis that cleans the blood using the lining of your abdomen (the peritoneum) instead of using your bloodstream. A catheter is placed in your abdomen, and a special fluid is put in and drained out, pulling waste and excess fluid with it. It can often be done at home and gives more flexibility but requires daily management and care to avoid infection.
