We all have to collaborate with users outside of our organization. It's a MUST.
A SharePoint site is a GREAT way to collaborate with these folks. Can you imagine? All the things I talk about...can you imagine being able to do that with folks outside of your organization?! It would bring your collaboration to the next level!
The issue is...Microsoft doesn't make it easy...or simple...But I do :-)

Go to SharePointFreebie.com, not only for your list building intro, but also to hop on my email list. I send out an, email-subscriber only kinda magazine. It's another way to spread the good SharePoint word. But again...you only get it if you're subscribed.
I'm starting a community next year to bring ALL of the SharePoint help I can provide to you, under ONE roof. There is just TOO much for you to know and I want to make sure I can give it all to you in one nice cozy part of the internet...and that's inside the SPHD Community. I might build this in public as well. If I do, I'm going to do it here (need to be logged into LinkedIn).
