With the recent bombing by the United States of Iran's nuclear facilities, there is renewed interest in presidential war powers.

The Founding Fathers were clear: Presidents do NOT have the power to engage in offensive military engagements without the consent of Congress.

This is a foreign concept to modern Americans as Presidents have ordered hundreds, if not thousands, of military strikes over the past 200 years without conferring with Congress.

In this episode, we examine what the Constitution says about war and what the word "war" meant to the founding generation. We also review how the first four Presidents handled war and, finally, we examine the redundant and unconstitutional War Powers Act of 1973.
