Setting Your Own Boundaries and Making Your Own Choices

For too long, religion taught us what to think, what to do, and where our boundaries should be set. We developed and learned codependence and helplessness that caused all kinds of issues. Learning to make our own decisions and set our boundaries is challenging at first, but we get better at it through practice and when we discover our authentic selves.

While many of us yearn for truth and understanding, the systems we participate in often prevent us from attaining genuine freedom in our everyday lives. As we move away from organized religion, we begin to recognize patterns. We believe that addressing many of these challenges requires us to examine all aspects of our lives, including:

* Toxic Leaders

* Toxic/Dangerous Organizations

* Our Mental Well-Being

* The Things We Learn on the Journey

Regardless of your belief system, we encourage you to unlearn anything that doesn’t benefit you. This will lead to healing and uncover a new way forward!

How to Be Resilient in the Best Way According to the American Psychological Association, resilience is the process and outcome of successfully adapting to difficult or challenging life experiences, especially through mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility and adjustment to external and internal demands. A number of factors contribute to how well people adapt to adversities, including the ways in which individuals view and engage with the world, the availability and quality of social resources, and specific coping strategies. Psychological research demonstrates that the resources and skills associated with resilience can be cultivated and practiced. “I do my own research.” “Do you have a lab? What method did you employ for your double-blind study? Can you reference the peer-reviewed papers you published?” We usually mean that we watched something online, did a Google search, or found some people who agree with us. Although it’s not something new, it does more than cause us to be wrong; it also harms people. Jim Bakker Jim Bakker remains one of the OG's of televangelist grifters. From the PTL ministry's collapse to his many criminal convictions, he has failed himself through his relentless need to grift and make money from well-meaning people. As he nears the end of his life, he continues to beg other people for money instead of doing something more noble. What a huge, embarrassing failure! But we shouldn’t feel sorry for him. We need to stop people like this from taking advantage of our neighbors. After all, aren’t we supposed to love and protect them? 22 – Tim Whitaker & TNE – How We Enable Abusers This Episode will be released on both The Unlearning Curve and the Desert Sanctuary podcasts. It dives deeper into how we have operated in the past and how people enable the abuser to behave badly (led by Megan South Benninger). History During the 2023 incident with platforming an accused abuser at the Theo bros beer camp, The New Evangelicals and Tim Whitaker were deeply involved in participating and promoting. When abuse survivors asked for an explanation, they were ignored, dismissed, and harassed, including me. Megan Benninger joined us on the Desert Sanctuary Podcast to discuss the incident, but very few supportive actions were taken by the speakers who were encouraged to speak up. Tim responded with a video, after 5 minutes of research and talking to the accused abuser, that was eventually removed by his board. Here is our podcast episodes if you want that history.
