This week’s V8 Sleuth Podcast guest might be better known for their voice than their name, having played a key role in Bathurst 1000 broadcasts and Channel 7’s touring car racing coverage through the mid-1980s and 1990s. Englishman Richard Hay was in Australia recently and caught up with Noonz to chat about his memories of Mount Panorama, working under Mike Raymond and alongside the likes of Garry Wilkinson, Neil Crompton and Doug Mulray. He also talks about how his father Neville became involved in motorsport commentary and how that in-turn led him to being a cameraman, commentator, producer and presenter across his career in motorsport media. He also shares some fun tales from his time as a racer himself, including taking part in the Le Mans 24 Hours! This week’s ‘Mini’ edition of the V8 Sleuth Podcast comes from our chat with David Reynolds almost exactly five years ago in March 2020, when he visited Sleuth HQ with his chauffeur for the day - future Supercars champ (and his then enduro co-driver) Will Brown! In this snippet, Reynolds opened up on a very serious topic: a tragic tarmac rally accident from the early part of his career. Two weeks after securing the 2007 Australian Carrera Cup Championship, Reynolds was competing in the Mount Buller Sprint with navigator Paul Flintoft. Their Elfin MS8 Clubman spun off the road and crashed down a 20 metre cliff, killing Flintoft and leaving Reynolds with head injuries. This week’s edition of the V8 Sleuth Podcast powered by Castrol looks back at the rise and fall of one of Australian motorsport’s most exciting categories: AUSCAR. Over two parts, the racer known as both ‘Coighty’ and ‘D-Russ’ takes us back through his diverse career behind the wheel, culminating in his reputation as one of Supercars’ top co-drivers. In Part 2 he goes into his years as a hired gun for Supercars teams, including a long run with Kelly Racing that spanned its Holden and Nissan eras. Russell touches on his near-miss on a deal that would’ve landed him on the grid full-time in 2012, plus his infamous collision with a kangaroo in the early laps of the 2013 Bathurst 1000, and shares the story of a famously disastrous pre-Bathurst kayaking trip undertaken by the Kelly Racing enduro drivers! He also covers his unexpected exit from Tickford in early 2019, success with Erebus Motorsport, and his decision to depart the team earlier this year only for them to win Bathurst. The V8 Sleuth Podcast

Australian motorsport veteran David Russell joins us for this week’s edition of the V8 Sleuth Podcast powered by Castrol. Over two parts, the racer known as both ‘Coighty’ and ‘D-Russ’ takes us back through his diverse career behind the wheel, culminating in his reputation as one of Supercars’ top co-drivers. In Part 1 he talks about his dad’s racing, why he didn’t go via the traditional karting route and starting his racing career in his mid-teens aboard two very different machines: a turbocharged Datsun Sports Sedan and a bog-standard Suzuki Swift! He also covers his years in GT Production with Proton, the competition that kick-started his Supercars career, racing in the Bathurst 12 Hour, and some of the behind-the-scenes wheeling and dealing to move up the ladder. The V8 Sleuth Podcast

Bathurst 1000 winner Todd Hazelwood – as he will now forever be introduced! – joins us for this week’s edition of the V8 Sleuth Podcast powered by Castrol for a look back at the remarkable path that his career has taken. Hazelwood starts Part 2 reliving the year that he says “broke” him; the 2018 season where he and Matt Stone Racing stepped up to the Supercars Championship. He opens up on the challenges of that year and how it led to him having to leave the team at the end of the following year. He talks about his two seasons with Brad Jones Racing, including his maiden Supercars pole and maiden podium finish - albeit one he regards with a bit of an asterisk - and his return to MSR for 2022. Hazelwood also goes in-depth on his switch to the Blanchard Racing Team for the inaugural season of Gen3 and it unravelled, before revealing just how bad co-driver Brodie Kostecki was feeling in the lead-up to their Bathurst 1000 victory - and just how bad Todd was feeling after it! Bathurst 1000 winner Todd Hazelwood – as he will now forever be introduced! – joins us for this week’s edition of the V8 Sleuth Podcast powered by Castrol for a look back at the remarkable path that his career has taken. In Part 1, we start with the present and his victory at this year’s Repco Bathurst 1000 with Brodie Kostecki and Erebus Motorsport, before delving back into the unusual path he took through the sport. He opens up on his family’s pivotal role in getting him through the sport, from fundraising through sausage sizzles and memberships to remortgaging their home, and the key role an open-wheel racing champion played in his progression. We also cover his successful season on the reality TV show Shannons Supercar Showdown, and how it indirectly led to his first full-time Dunlop Series drive. He also reveals the white lie he told to secure that ride with Matt Stone Racing, and his very, very nervous wait through the first practice session for word from the bank...
