In today’s episode, I’m joined by Drs. Melissa Tiessen and Karen Dyck, as we explore the topic of self-care. We talk about the barriers to self-care, especially for women and women therapists in particular. Melissa and Karen share fascinating research about time usage and gender disparities. We also talk burn-out, human giver syndrome, and intentional self-care. If you want to find creative, playful ways of injecting even micro self-care practices into your life, don’t go anywhere.
Drs. Melissa Tiessen is a registered psychologist in the areas of Clinical and Health Psychology and Karen Dr. Karen Dyck completed her Master’s Degree in Developmental Psychology and her Doctoral Degree in Clinical Psychology. They are two mid-career(ish) psychologists who love what they do and also recognize how important it is to take care of themselves in this work. They know that there are many female mental health professionals trying to balance careers with additional caregiving roles - whether young children, aging parents, or anything in between. Many of these women value self-care but struggle with making it a priority. Karen and Melissa created Intentional Therapist to help female mental health professionals stay healthy and happy through intentional, creative, and playful self-care.
