Alexandra Knight - From Doubt to Determination: The story that started STEMAZING
Manage episode 448765807 series 3589694
To kick off ‘This is STEMAZING’ you’ll hear from STEMAZING’s founder and CEO Alex Knight on her story growing up, what attracted her to a career in engineering and ultimately what led her to launching an inspiration and inclusion revolution.
Alex describes herself as an unlikely engineer and recovering wallflower! Growing up in a small village in Kent, Alex's life was profoundly impacted by a traumatic car accident that left her sister with lasting disabilities. Seeing the barriers that were placed before her sister as a result of her injuries made Alex acutely aware of the need for equality and inclusion.
Alex recalls how she struggled with feelings of not belonging when she first embarked on her education in engineering. She explains how none of the tutors, or role models in the literature looked like her. Despite being in a male-dominated field, Alex found her way through sheer determination, eventually graduating top of her class. “The only way that I managed to do that was that I intentionally had to stretch my comfort zone every step of the way”, she says.
Hear how Alex founded STEMAZING, an organisation designed to inspire young minds and support women in STEM, transforming both children’s and women’s lives through STEM outreach. Alex, and STEMAZING, also supports other women in STEM to become the next role models for the future generation of engineers and scientists.
