Self-Care Is Necessary for an Autism Mom’s Well-Being

Self-care isn’t selfish. It’s self-preservation, which means survival or avoiding harm. We spend our days keeping our child safe and supported. It’s easy to miss the boat when it comes to our own needs.

Moms are tough, but even they run out of fuel eventually, which impacts them and their child. I’ve been there, and I know you have too. It feels awful and our identity as moms takes a hit.

In my Thrive Course coming out soon, I unpack that more in terms of cognitive distortions or stinkin thinkin, anxiety, depression, etc.

A benefit of self-care is that moms, who model self-care, teach their child the importance of doing the same. As humans, we learn by example.

Incorporating Self-Care into a Busy Schedule for Moms of Autistics

One way we support our child is to maintain structure and routine. By now, we’ve become experts on routines. So, why not embed something for ourselves in our daily routine?

It sounds impossible. Afterall, we never know what the world will bring one minute to the next. Our child’s experiences and needs guide the flow of our day. But that doesn’t mean it is impossible.

One aspect of my morning routine is my green drink. I don’t have time to put together the ultimate smoothie. Instead, I use a powder that I can pour into my water bottle that includes super greens and probiotics. It supports my immune system and digestive system, which are critical to my health.

Tips for Moms of Autistics to Integrate Self-Care Into Their Busy Schedule

The goal is for moms of autistics to move from “caring only for my child” to “caring for me too,” which is so powerful! They are connected.

Here are some creative tips to transform your autism journey.

Tip #1 Start Small - You want your self-care regimen to be manageable and sustainable. You aren’t used to doing things for you most likely. Starting with 5 minutes of something, such as meditation or breathing techniques, is a great way to start.

Tip #2 Prioritize it and put it on your calendar or schedule. - It might not happen exactly at that time, but it is on your radar and more likely to occur.

Tip #3 Leverage Technology - set alarms on your phone as a reminder to engage. This might be checking in with yourself. Ask, “What do I need today?”

Tip # 4 Delegate Wisely - Try the 5D Model of Delete, Digitize, Delegate, Defer, Do to manage your tasks efficiently and make time for your needs.

Tip#5 Engage in a Hobby - Creativity is a great de-stresser and outlet.

Tip #6 Connect with a Community - Share experiences with others who get it and lift one another up. Check out the new Autism Thrive Tribe online community for moms of autistics
