In this episode of Wealth Pathways, expert Saul Eslake takes host Sarah Stancombe through the role of gold in the economy and financial markets, throughout history and today.

In 2016, Saul Eslake was appointed as the University of Tasmania's inaugural Vice-Chancellor’s Fellow. Saul Eslake is also an independent consulting economist and has worked as an economist in the Australian financial markets for 25 years, including 14 years as Chief Economist at the Australia & New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ). After leaving ANZ in mid-2009, Saul was Director of the Productivity Growth program at the Grattan Institute, a non-aligned public policy 'think tank' affiliated with the University of Melbourne.Saul is currently a member of the Parliamentary Budget Office's Expert Advisory Panel, and of the Australian Taxation Office's "Tax Gap" Expert Panel. He is also Chair of the CSIRO's Decadel Forecasting Project Advisory Board.

In this episode, Saul Eslake highlights the history of gold in financial markets - how it has changed over time, its role in early human history, and under what circumstances its value is most likely to increase or decrease.

Together, Sarah and Saul Eslake discuss how learning about the financial market can be tricky, but staying disciplined by keeping up with gold prices and reading widely about the financial field are important elements of researching and opening oneself to new ideas.
