he Crimean War was fought to decide which of the five empires that dominated Europe in the nineteenth century would become the most powerful. Two of the empires involved, Britain and France, fought to maintain the status quo. The Russian Empire fought for the right to expand its territory in eastern Europe and elsewhere. The Austrian Empire remained neutral throughout this war while the Ottoman Empire, once the most powerful in the world, survived a Russian attack but was revealed to be weak and destined for eventual collapse. The Crimean War did not directly change the world, but it led indirectly to changes which were to completely re-shape Europe.

------

In part 2 we discuss how poor living conditions led to a bulk of the deaths suffered during the war. We also discuss the "meat and potatoes" of the Crimean War
