Blowout June Payrolls: 147K Jobs Added, Smashing Expectations; Unemployment Rate Drops To 4.1%

• BLS published a blowout job report: in June, the US added 147K payrolls, blowing away the median estimate of 106K, and higher than the upward revised May print of 144K.

Remarkable, and in a dramatic change from the Biden tradition, previous months were revised higher: April was revised up by 11,000, from +147,000 to +158,000, and the change for May was revised up by 5,000, from +139,000 to +144,000.

• It wasn’t just the headline print that surprised to the upside: perhaps an even bigger surprise was the unemployment rate which dropped from 4.2% to 4.1%, denying expectations of an increase to 4.3%, and far below the Fed’s recently upward revised estimate of a 4.5%.

Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ May Not Be The Deficit Disaster Critics Claim — Here’s Why

• The One Big Beautiful Bill to advance President Donald Trump’s agenda may not have the devastating impact on the national deficit that some critics claim.
• The Congressional Budget Office (CBO), tasked with providing “objective, nonpartisan information to support the Congressional budget process,” estimated that the Senate version of the GOP’s reconciliation bill would add $3.3 trillion to the deficit over 10 years. The president’s Council of Economic Advisors (CEA), on the other hand, estimated that the bill could reduce the deficit by $4.5 trillion.
• The dramatic discrepancy between the estimates from CBO and the CEA stems largely from differing assumptions about what counts as expected future policy, known as the baseline.
• CBO relies on a “current law” baseline, which assumes that key provisions of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) will expire. In contrast, the Trump administration and some fiscal watchdogs favor a “current policy” baseline, which assumes those tax cuts will be extended, as they often are, and therefore does not treat the extension of the 2017 Trump tax cuts as a new cost.

The Senate bill does include more tax relief than extending current law, and more than the House, but it is paid for by the $1.6 trillion in savings from spending reforms in the bill. It was also done to provide more certainty to businesses and respond to the same critics who were saying the sunsets were artificial. More to come tomorrow, but this bill reduces deficits over the next ten years, even if you ignore increased revenues from dynamic growth. And importantly, the $1.6 trillion in spending reductions exceeds the bicameral framework agreed to prior to final passage of the budget resolution with Speaker Johnson and Leader Thune.

• Judge Moss’ opinion does not concern the buffet of (very good) reasons to amend America’s broken immigration system. He instead takes issue with the government’s claimed authority in fixing that system.
• Moss concludes that the segments of the U.S. Code cited in Trump’s proclamation do not provide “the President with the unilateral authority to limit the rights of aliens present in the United States to apply for asylum.”
• Moss further quarrels with the constitutionality of the proclamation. Article II of the Constitution vests executive power in the President of the United States; Article IV guarantees each state protection against invasion.
• Those clauses cannot “be read to grant the President or his delegees authority to adopt an alternative immigration system, which supplants the statutes that Congress has enacted and the regulations that the responsible agencies have promulgated,” Moss argues.
• The brevity, clarity, and foresight of the founders are never more apparent than when read alongside modern legal opinions. Moss’ opinion would see an entire class (illegal aliens) granted protection from Trump’s proclamation. Voiding Trump’s proclamation would fold nearly the entire world’s population into a protected class of asylum seekers.

• After months of waiting for federal approval to deputize Florida National Guard Judge Advocate General Corps officers (JAGs) as immigration judges, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and President Donald Trump indicated during a visit to the newly opened “Alligator Alcatraz” at the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport that the plan will move forward.
• According to Florida’s 37-page Immigration Enforcement Operations Plan submitted by state officials in May, the Florida National Guard has nine field-grade JAGs suitable for training as immigration judges, and can be trained within six weeks of Justice Department approval. “The Florida National Guard has offered JAGs to be trained as immigration judges to expedite the legal process at the request of the federal government,” and speed up immigration deportations, per the document.
