Microsoft researchers are taking the ChatGPT language model to the next level by expanding its capabilities beyond computers to control physical robots in the real world. In a recent experiment, ChatGPT was given control over a drone to find specific objects in a room, showcasing its ability to understand natural language and execute physical tasks. This development builds on Microsoft's partnership with OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, and could have significant implications for various industries. Meanwhile, Amazon's "Just Walk Out" system is facing challenges with controlling costs and promoting the system to major retailers, despite aggressive marketing efforts. Google also made several exciting announcements during its Google I/O keynote, including new features for Google Maps and AI-powered photo and text editing.

Summary:

Microsoft researchers are working on expanding the capabilities of the ChatGPT language model beyond the confines of a computer to allow it to control physical robots in the real world. In a recent experiment, they gave ChatGPT control over a drone to find specific objects in a room, demonstrating its ability to understand natural language and execute physical tasks. While the researchers acknowledge that their work is just a small part of what's possible, they caution that ChatGPT's results should be used with careful analysis. This development builds on Microsoft's partnership with OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, and could have significant implications for a range of industries.

Although Amazon's "Just Walk Out" system was intended to be a futuristic centerpiece of its foray into physical retail, the team responsible for the technology has struggled to keep costs under control and promote the system to other major retailers. While Amazon had aggressively marketed the grab-and-go, cashierless technology behind its Amazon Go convenience stores to large retailers worldwide, deals with major retail chains have been few and far between. Despite offering the Just Walk Out technology to Woolworths, the largest retailer in Australia, and having Kohl's department store executives weigh the pros and cons of installing it, Amazon has not yet deployed the technology in a large store that it does not own itself.

During Google's developer conference, Google I/O keynote, the company made several announcements, including the unveiling of a new "Immersive View for Routes" feature in select cities on Google Maps, AI-powered Magic Editor for photos, and a new feature called Magic Compose that rewrites texts in different styles. Google also announced PaLM 2, its newest large language model, which will power the company's updated Bard chat tool and improve support for writing and debugging code.
