Student athletes are often under a lot of pressure to perform, to win, to be the best. Some of their pressures may come from parents, peers, internally and/or coaches; however, coaches can play an important role in mentoring and supporting their athletes. Coaches often spend more time with their athletes than parents and many are seen as role models and confidants. Unfortunately, most schools have sanctions for substance use or possession that are outdated and punitive, setting these youth up for failure by removing them from their prosocial activities rather than recognizing the disease state associated with substances. We are joined again by Dr Sarah Polley, adult and child addiction psychiatrist.
