In 2022 Enterprise Architecture is (arguably) facing yet another existential crisis. How do we move on from the rather inward focussed navel gazing and make progress on standardisation and professionalisation? So that we can really focus on delivering value for our organisations. This Business Technology Strategy & Architecture Podcast Mash up of the below podcasts really explores what we need to do in order to make pragmatic progress on the professionalisation of Enterprise, Business and Technology Architects

Architect Tomorrow - https://youtube.com/ArchitectTomorrow/ Business Architecture Straight Talk https://bit.ly/st-podcasts / https://bizarchmastery.com/straighttalk Consultants Saying Things - https://www.consultantssayingthings.com The Argument by IASA - https://iasaglobal.org/Public/Connect/THE-ARGUMENT/Public/Events/TheArgument.aspxTech After Five - https://www.techafterfive.com/

Standardising the Architecture profession is too big a topic for one episode or even one podcast (or one book author for that matter!)

Whilst Oliver Cronk leader of Architect Tomorrow hosted this first mashup episode with Paul Preiss (CEO IASA), Chris Lockhart (CST), Whynde Kuehn (Straight Talk), Phil Yanov (Tech After Five and CST) the next episode will get picked up by one of the other podcast hosts. Chris Potts of CHRIS POTTS ONLINE mentoring (and author of the Fruition Trilogy of books) joined us as well and we hope he can join us for some of the future episodes too!

Massive thanks for everyone's time and sense of humour during this recording - so look out for the next episode where we start to dive into this topic. And as always if you'd like to join the conversation please do find us on LinkedIn with the #ArchitectTomorrow hashtag.

In this episode, Oliver speaks with David Kohnstamm from Leafcloud about a fundamental shift in how we think about data centre locations. Forget remote warehouses - the future of sustainable computing lies in nursing homes, apartment complexes, and anywhere with constant heat demand.David reveals why traditional data centres waste enormous amounts of energy cooling servers, while distributed computing can turn that "waste" heat into free heating for communities. The key insight? It's all about matching your infrastructure to locations with 24/7 heat requirements.- Why nursing homes are perfect data centre locations (constant heat demand, 24/7 operations)- The fatal flaw with office-based edge computing (weekends, evenings, seasonal gaps)- How Leaf Cloud delivers servers that literally pay their rent with waste heat- Why PUE metrics actually reward throwing heat away- The difference between heat recovery that works vs. heat recovery that fails- Why hot water heating beats space heating for consistent demand- How distributed computing can scale to meet 50% of residential heating needsThe Bottom Line: Location strategy for data centres should follow heat demand patterns, not just connectivity or land costs. When you place servers where constant heat is needed, you solve both sustainability and cost challenges simultaneously.#SustainableTech #DataCentres #GreenComputing #HeatRecovery #DistributedComputing…

Please note: We apologise for the audio and video quality in this episode - as Oliver mentions, "we're a bit hesitant here because we're kind of squatting in part of Tech Show London trying to record a conversation" - but we couldn't miss the opportunity to capture this discussion! In this episode of Architect Tomorrow, we catch up with Mark from Deep Green at Tech Show London to discuss their groundbreaking approach to data centre sustainability.Deep Green operates data centres with a crucial difference - they capture all the waste heat from computing and provide it free to industry and district heating systems. As Mark explains: "97% of the electrons that go into a computer come out as heat" - turning data centres into efficient electric heaters that serve dual purposes.Key topics covered:- How heat recovery makes data centres 20% cheaper to cool and operate- The role of AI and high-density computing in creating more waste heat- Why this model becomes economically attractive above 20kW per rack- The potential to heat 80% of the UK through district heating systems- The intersection of climate emergency and digital infrastructureMark shares insights on market adoption, explaining: "we're unfathomably cheap if you do this you just make yourself richer" and discusses how sustainability credentials combined with superior economics are driving customer interest. This conversation offers a fascinating perspective on how the AI revolution's power demands could actually accelerate decarbonisation efforts across Europe. 🔗 Learn more: https://deepgreen.energy🎯 Part of our ongoing series on sustainable technology and digital transformation#SustainableTech #DataCentres #GreenIT #AI #DistrictHeating #Sustainability #ArchitectTomorrow…

Penny Townsend and Oliver recap 2023 in 20 minutes, covering a range of topics (naturally including AI which is one prediction we definitely got right last time around!), but also data, working patterns, sustainability and more. We look at what we got right and wrong (also using some assistance from Claude.ai) from our previous predictions for 2023 video which you can find here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBgxc_qdGZU (and also on the audio Architect Tomorrow podcast). So what do transformation leaders and technology architects need to be thinking about as we move into 2024? What can be planned for / pre-empted? What trends do we see continuing? What will change? Less uncertainty than before? More coming in the next episode that will land in early January but this gives you a starting point. Here are the longer summaries that I mentioned on the call but didn't talk through all of: So as I said amusingly (given how much we talked about the impact of GenAI in 2023!) I’ve got the pro version of Claude to create a summary of what we covered last year (and also to recap some wikipedia content about 2023 as well: The key technology predictions made by the panellists included: A continued focus on large language models like GPT-3 and the need to address issues around intellectual property, education, and ethics related to AI. Increased consideration of sustainability in technology decisions, but a lack of concrete data and standardised metrics to truly measure impact. Risk of superficial "greenwashing" without these. Potential refocusing on some technology basics like open source software, data management, and integration amid the hype around concepts like the metaverse and web3. Legacy systems presenting growing costs and security risks that may finally drive some modernization in 2023 after years of deferral. An explosion of APIs requiring more API management discipline and event-driven architectural approaches to rationalise and integrate APIs. Greater constraints on resources (financial, labour, geopolitical) forcing a ruthlessness and focus on efficiency in technology spending and making companies show their "true colours". So in summary, a mix of revisiting some technology fundamentals while also addressing emerging issues like sustainability and the responsible use of AI. AI and Large Language Models Discussion around intellectual property, education, and ethical considerations with the rise of models like GPT-3. Potential need to rethink IP laws, fair use, and what skills should be focused on in education. Sustainability Growing consideration of sustainability in technology, but gaps remain around concrete data and measurement. Risk of "greenwashing" without standardized ESG metrics. Climate change driving very real business impacts that may spur change. People and Culture The "great resignation" and its effect on the workforce. Concerns around inequality, mental health, purpose and trust in public institutions. Predictions around increased constraints financially and on resources in 2023. Technology Hype around concepts like metaverse and web3 vs refocusing on technology basics like open source, data, integration. Legacy system costs and security risks driving some modernization. API explosion requiring more API management and event driven approaches. Technology Advances in AI lead to major international summit at Bletchley Park on managing risks. But deepfake audio and imagery also starts being used in harassment and scams. NHS COVID tracing app is discontinued. Vaccines become available commercially with age limits raised. Business Multiple retailers like Wilko go into administration leading to store closures and job losses. But some brands get rescued or reopen. Strikes heavily impact sectors like rail, leading to deal between Do look out for the next episode!…
