The world often feels rigged. And this episode is a wake-up call to recognize the barriers that exist for those who don’t fit the traditional mold. In this episode, which is a kind of tribute to my dear departed Dad, I recount some powerful lessons from the man who was a brilliant psychiatrist and my biggest champion. He taught me that if something feels off about the environment you’re in, it probably is—and it’s absolutely hella-not your fault. We dare to break into the uncomfortable truth that many workplaces are designed for a very specific demographic, leaving neurodivergent individuals, particularly those on the autism spectrum, feeling excluded. I share three stories in which my Dad imparted to me more than my fair share of his wisdom, and I'm hoping you to can feel empowered. You'll learn that we can advocate for ourselves and others to create a more inclusive work culture. This episode of Feasting on Design is supported by the new season of Wireframe – a podcast all about how UX can help technology fit into our lives. Hosted by Khoi Vinh, Senior Director of Design at Adobe, Wireframe is a show for designers and the design-curious. This Season of Wireframe leans into how design intersects with the changing world around us. There are stories about how user experience design helps people manage stress and sleeplessness; find something good to watch on an online streaming service; help individuals, creators and social causes through crowdfunding. It explores how design helps older family members understand technology, and the podcast also chats with designers trying to make voting easier. Turns out, it’s really hard. You’ll hear from designers and design leaders who have built UX and UI experiences for companies like Headspace, Patreon, Kickstarter, Withings, and other companies that are putting design at the forefront of their companies’ experiences. Whether you’re into UX, UI, technology… or just curious about the way design impacts our everyday lives, I hope you’ll check out the show. Welcome to Feasting on Design! I’m your host Jason Frostholm. I know it’s a bit topsy-turvy in the world right now with way Covid–19 has disrupted our day-to-day lives. Whether you’re now working from home, trying to find things to keep your kids busy, or lecturing your boomer parents about going to the YMCA to work out while the virus is still spreading, all of our lives have been disrupted. I hope that this podcast can be an opportunity for you to take your mind off of the never-ending news cycle. Let this be your opportunity to breathe, disconnect from all of our social distancing, and tune in to turn off from the rest of the world—even if it’s for just an hour. Give yourself a mental break from the stress that is out in the world right now. So before we get officially started on this episode, do me a favor try and clear your head of any thoughts, and take a deep breath in through your nose, hold it and count to four, and exhale through your mouth. Great, isn’t that a little better? The next time you’re feeling overwhelmed, just remember to take that deep breath, hold it for a few seconds, and exhale. It’s a great way to reset your brain. So, are you ready to get this show on the road? Today on Feasting on Design, I’m talking with Nick van der Walle, founder of Astute Graphics. We chat about how he went from a background in design engineering to building a business around graphic design tools, why businesses like Astute Graphics moving to a subscription is a way that allows them to provide better service and innovate faster for their customers, the importance of continuing to learn and why companies should offer training opportunities to their employees, plus a whole lot more.
