Chef Shuai Wang was the runner-up on the 22nd season of Bravo’s Top Chef and is the force behind two standout restaurants in Charleston, South Carolina—Jackrabbit Filly and King BBQ—where he brings together the flavors of his childhood in Beijing and the spirit of the South in some pretty unforgettable ways. He grew up just a short walk from Tiananmen Square, in a tiny home with no electricity or running water, where his grandmother often cooked over charcoal. Later, in Queens, New York, his mom taught herself to cook—her first dishes were a little salty, but they were always made with love. And somewhere along the way, Shuai learned that cooking wasn’t just about food—it was about taking care of people. After years working in New York kitchens, he made his way to Charleston and started building something that feels entirely his own. Today, we’re talking about how all those experiences come together on the plate, the family stories behind his cooking, and what it’s been like to share that journey on national TV. David Lee Martin is a writer, poet, and dynamic entrepreneur whose transformative journey began at the age of 19. Once lost in a world of substance abuse and spiritual confusion, a life-altering encounter with Jesus turned his life around, igniting a passion for faith and creativity. Now, with nearly 30 years of experience, David encourages others to harness their creativity and grace, bringing hope and inspiration to a world in desperate need. David shares his story of realigning his priorities, simplifying his business ventures, and focusing on his passion for writing. As a result, he has published short books on Kindle, selling at 99cents each and generated nearly 2 million in royalties. Some key takeaways from David's journey: It is important to know the difference between a job and a business. We need to build a business that works for us rather than a business we work for. Inviting God into our business partnerships is critical. We need to align ourselves with our "one or a few things" and not pursue numerous ventures. It's crucial to keep the conversation going with God and keep updating our goals and aspirations. It is not about trying to be someone you're not, but rather, drawing your heart back into a relationship with the Lord and being enough.
