Investigations play a critical role in the diagnosis, monitoring and screening for disease in general practice. And the use of such tests is increasing both in Australia and internationally. While some of this increase is appropriate, a growing body of evidence suggests that non-rational testing is a significant problem. This is costly and problematic for GPs but also poses significant harm to patients.
Registrars, especially those new to general practice, are at particular risk of non-rational test ordering. Supervisors can play a key role is supporting this critical aspect of practice. A number of strategies have been described for the most effective and appropriate use of tests in the general practice setting.
