Your Daily Prayer 🙏🏾 1 Samuel 16:7
God looks at the heart.
FRUITS OF THE SPIRIT ACTION: PATIENCE
Slow down and fully enjoy one moment today.
Today’s daily devotional is based on the story of David is Chosen. God chooses David, a young shepherd boy no older than 17, and is anointed king over Israel by Samuel.
STORY
Bible in a Year: David is Chosen
Scripture
"But the Lord said to Samuel, 'Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." - 1 Samuel 16:7
Charisma, status, looks, strength. These were all measurable traits people looked for in kings. But what did God look for? What does it mean to be chosen by God?
In this episode of Bible in a Year, we witness the anointing of David as the future king of Israel. This pivotal moment in history reveals key truths about God's character and His criteria for choosing leaders.
It can all be boiled down to this verse: "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart" (1 Samuel 16:7).
When Samuel arrives in Bethlehem to anoint the next king, he is initially drawn to Eliab, Jesse's eldest son, assuming that he must be the one chosen by God due to his impressive appearance. But God rejected him.
God doesn’t care about stature…He cares about the heart.
God's criteria for leadership are vastly different from those of the world. While we often prioritize status, talent, and charisma, God values the condition of the heart above all else.
David wasn’t perfect. He made a ton of mistakes and failed in so many ways. But his heart was always striving after God.
God doesn’t need your perfect actions. He needs your humble heart.
God sees beyond the external façade and discerns the true condition of our hearts. He chooses leaders not based on worldly standards of success or popularity but based on their willingness to serve Him wholeheartedly.
REFLECTION
Examine your own heart and motives before God. Are there areas in your life where you prioritize external appearances or worldly standards of success over obedience to God? This week, commit to cultivating a heart that aligns with God's purposes and desires. Pray for the humility to surrender your own ambitions and aspirations to God, trusting that He sees and values the condition of your heart above all else. Strive to be like David, a leader who seeks after God's heart and faithfully follows His leading.
PRAYER
But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.
1 SAMUEL 16:7
Thank You God that the same anointing that rested on David in 1 Samuel 16 is the same anointing that rests on my life. When men try to overlook me because of what they perceive as a hindrance, I thank You that You will anoint me in their presence, because You determine elevation by the heart. Therefore, keep my heart pure through all circumstances and seasons of my life because this will be the key to my opportunities and advancement. Just like You strategically placed David in the palace... the place of his future destiny, I thank You for placing me in the vicinity of my destiny as well. Father You can call upon me because my heart is positioned to do Your will fully and completely. If You’ll anoint me and choose me, I’ll go. Thank You for anointing me and calling me in the presence of those who doubt me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen. 🙏🏾 ❤️
