Adversity is a marathon that we don’t feel prepared for. When that’s the case, we have to adapt, and manage our energy to get through it. One of the reasons some adversity seems insurmountable is because it leaves us feeling powerless. We aren’t! We can still make choices. Acknowledge what’s happening, connect with and support others to keep a more positive mindset, and act! Having a plan, or nested plans, keep you focused and moving forward in the face of adversity.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

In order to move through adversity:

  • Acknowledge
  • Connect – get and give support
  • Meditate
  • Dance
  • Plan

BEST MOMENTS

Through adversity, not only are we given opportunity to discover our inner strength, we are also given the gift of foresight so we can shine a light for others who go through the experience after us.

–Rachel Bermingham

It is your reaction to adversity, not the adversity itself, that determines how your life’s story will develop. –Deieter F. Uchtdorf

It is under the greatest adversity that there exists the greatest potential for doing good, both for oneself and others. –Dalai Lama

Perhaps the most radical act of resistance in the face of adversity is to live joyfully. –Ari Honorvar

In this episode, we explore the heart of trauma work—not by focusing solely on the events themselves, but on the lasting impact they leave in our bodies. Trauma disconnects us from the present moment, often leaving us feeling unsafe in our own lives. But what if healing begins with reclaiming our ability to be fully present? Together, we’ll talk about how practicing presence can gently rewire the effects of trauma and expand our sense of safety—one moment at a time. Whether the trauma is political, interpersonal, or institutional, the common thread is the loss of safety and connection. This episode is an invitation to begin rebuilding those foundations, slowly and kindly, from the inside out. KEY TAKEAWAYS It's about really understanding and kind of figuring out the parts of your life that you are escaping because of the trauma. Practice doing something differently and notice how you feel. When we have our trauma lens on, we see what the trauma allows us to see, and we don't see anything else. We don't see the possibility or the opportunity. Everything survivors do is the skill of surviving. Sometimes surviving works against our ability to imagine. I call it being cloaked. If you weren't cloaked, then you would have to see. And it's so painful to see. Generational trauma is through missed opportunity of connection. So, because I was traumatized, I was now lost in attunement to my child. And so, it's missed opportunity of connection, missed opportunity of regulation, missed opportunity of co-regulation, missed opportunity of deep attunement to a child who really deserves all my attention. And when I am too traumatized to be able to attune, then the impact on them is great on their nervous system. And so to me, that's one way through attachment, that's one way that that trauma continues. Because now I've reshaped my child's nervous system by not attuning. Well, and then the great thing that we also have just as humans is the ability to continue to grow, have neuroplasticity, nothing is ever not changeable, really. BEST MOMENTS That stubborn decision — to keep getting up — saved me more times than I can count. Life life’s all the time. Even under the best of circumstances, it's stressful. I wonder if you could imagine that you’re not the problem. We are here to care for and be in relationship with others. We can choose hope regardless of the environment we are in. We are wired and designed to be hopeful! We are wired to use our imagination to look at our future and create memories of that future and then think strategically about how to achieve our future goals. Hope is contagious too! We can connect with other hopeful people. Those that are always looking positively at the future and openly talking about - and chasing - their goals. It’s inspiring. And transfers hope – we become more hopeful by engaging with them. We learn how to be hopeful by watching them. Thanks Jon Tunheim for your wisdom and insights! KEY TAKEAWAYS Hope is a choice. You can learn to be hopeful and strengthen your hope skills. Here are the steps: See the future Set a goal Create strategies and pathways to move towards the goal Vary the pathway according to the obstacles you meet Use motivation and willpower to move forward and achieve that goal BEST MOMENTS It is hard to be a narcissist when you learn young that hope is believing in yourself, believing in others, and believing in your dreams. –Chan Hellman and Casey Gwinn Hope is not a step in life, it is a stance. It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men. –Fredrick Douglass VALUABLE RESOURCES If you’re struggling in a relationship and wondering if it might be controlling, you’re not alone. I’m so thrilled to have Molly Mandelberg as a guest on this episode. Molly is everything that Life After stands for; after a rough childhood, she chose to make her life what it is today including a healthy relationship and thriving business. And, she works with others to create and build world changing missions. KEY TAKEAWAYS When getting out of a relationship with a narcissist: You can make changes in the patterns you know. Your body will tell you when it’s wrong – so listen! Having people around you that can listen and hear you will help tremendously. Writing is a useful way to process what’s happening to you and confirms the behaviors and patterns of the narcissist. BEST MOMENTS Amazong quotes from Molly in this episode: “I definitely had a knowing.” “It’s not until we fully acknowledge that pattern that we’re able to hopefully break our way out of it.” “It’s gonna have to get a little bit uncomfortable to get out of that pattern.” “If this is a cycle that keeps continuining, do you wanna give it one year of your life? Do you wanna give it six years of your life? Do you wanna give it nine years of your life and maybe end up having his kids and being tied to him forever?” VALUABLE RESOURCES You can reach Molly at: Instagram.com/wild_one_rising and instagram.com/magicfacilitation If you’re struggling in a relationship and wondering if it might be controlling, you’re not alone. Your mindset can be impacted by limiting beliefs, fear and anxiety. Discover tips and tricks to change your limiting beliefs and mitigate or minimize your fear and anxiety so you can shift your mindset and achieve your dreams! We choose our mindset, and it’s much easier to do when we let go of our limiting beliefs and release our fears! KEY TAKEAWAYS Quick ways to reduce fear and anxiety which will help improve mindset. Focus on your breathing – breathing deeply compels our body to physically calm itself. Make sure that your exhale is longer than your inhale. Journal/write – keep track of how you are feeling/experiencing your fear for a couple of weeks. What patterns emerge? Writing the details down can help demystify your fears, thereby making them more manageable. Practice mindfulness – use what you learned in writing about your fears to become aware of your fears. Observe. Being passive raises your self-awareness and prevents you from doing the things you typically do when feeling the fear. Get out into nature – talk a walk outside. Being in nature is calming, reduces stress, and changes our moods, which all helps to shift our mindset. BEST MOMENTS Unease, anxiety, tension, stress, worry -- all forms of fear -- are caused by too much future, and not enough presence. –Eckhart Tolle We must build dikes of courage to hold back the flood of fear. – Martin Luther King Jr. The more you study delight, the more delight there is to study...I felt my life to be more full of delight. Not without sorrow or fear or pain or loss. But more full of delight. – Ross Gay In the stillness of the quiet, if we listen, we can hear the whisper of the heart giving strength to weakness, courage to fear, hope to despair. – Howard Thurman VALUABLE RESOURCES If you’re struggling in a relationship and wondering if it might be controlling, you’re not alone. Trigger Warning: This episode deals with the issue of domestic violence, including gun violence. This is a must listen episode. Elijah Gossett is my very special guest. He chooses to see that love is everywhere and we are so privileged to hear his views on joy, love, hope, resilience, and choosing his mindset even when faced with serious adversity. KEY TAKEAWAYS Choosing hope, joy, and beauty on the hard days is a conscious decision. No matter what you’ve been through, there’s beauty all around you if you take the time to absorb it.
