Over 20 Russian-born residents reportedly left stateless under apparent Serbian naturalization ban

More than 20 Russian-born residents of Serbia have been left stateless after giving up their Russian citizenship in order to receive Serbian passports, only to be denied them, The Moscow Times reported on Thursday.
According to Serbian law, individuals who have lived in the country for three years on a temporary residence permit become eligible for permanent residency and can then apply for citizenship. However, one of the requirements for naturalization is to first renounce any existing citizenship.
A consultant familiar with the issue told The Moscow Times that the problem may stem from an unofficial policy by Serbian authorities to stop granting citizenship to nationals of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus. In practice, he said, Serbia has effectively frozen the naturalization process for people from those countries.
