The Korean brand name SsangYong has disappeared this month in
Australia with the local distributor now adopting the KGM branding of its
parent company. The KGM Group acquired SsangYong two years ago
changing its name globally, at which time it was known here as KGM
SsangYong. The naming move is significant given the arrival of new
product – the recent KGM Torres mid-size SUV and the soon to be
launched Actyon coupe SUV in two grades, the nameplate returning after a
14-year hiatus. The Actyon credited with starting the sloped roof trend that
is now so prevalent with many SUVs. Two versions of the Actyon will be
available, the K50 at $47,990 drive-away and the K60 for another $3,000.
The Torres and Actyon models join the long-standing and highly regarded
Musso dual cab ute.

Mazda’s CX-5 Maxx Sport SUV – long standing but still a very competent SUV 1:31

Further on Mazda’s long standing CX-5 SUV but still highly competitive with ten models in a mix of petrol and diesel and front or all-wheel drive, I’m driving the second tier 2.5-litre six-speed automatic CX-5 Maxx Sport front wheel drive at $43,184 drive-away with optional metallic paint. I covered nearly 900km with a lot of highway cruising at the open road limit. The naturally aspirated four-cylinder with 140kW and 252Nm of torque did a workmanlike job but what surprised was the economy, averaging 7.4L/100km on 91 grade petrol with four passengers. This is simply a great allrounder, well shod 17-inch alloy wheels provide a very comfortable ride while the electric power assistance offers good feel whilst parking and on the run. Comfort and convenience items include dual zone climate control, satellite navigation, a head-up instrument display, well bolstered cloth seats, a rear-view camera, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto plus a good level of active safety elements. Thankfully the warning elements are not intrusive like many of the new breed of Chinese SUV’s. Disappointments – no wireless phone charger and the lack of a power rear door. Driving the popular Mazda CX-5 SUV today, Mazda’s top seller, it’s been around a long time in ten models, a mix of petrol and diesel and front or all-wheel drive. No hybrid but I’m told its coming. I drove the second tier 2.5-litre six-speed automatic CX-5 Maxx Sport front wheel drive - $43,184 drive-away, which included optional Soul Red Chrystal Metallic paint at $795. A colour that has in many ways become a trademark of Mazda. The CX-5 a good looker, still our fourth best-selling medium SUV, behind Toyota’s RAV4 and getting some strong competition these days from Kia’s Sportage and Hyundai’s Tuscon. I did nearly 900km in urban and country driving and it really surprised - well sorted, extremely comfortable for four adults – the Maxx Sport well specified apart from the lack of wireless phone charging and a power rear door. But it has dual zone air-conditioning with rear outlets, a welcome head up display, a rather small 8-inch display screen on the dash but just so safe to use with a rotary dialer to let you scroll through a menu – so much safer than many of the new Chinese SUV’s with their large touchscreens and no active buttons. Cupra launches a new mid-size SUV – the Terramar 1:00

Arriving this month from Spanish brand Cupra – a new mid-size SUV in three variants from $58,490 drive-away. Developed alongside the third generation Audio Q3, the Cupra Terramar is a replacement for the ageing Ateca and shares many body components with the new Audi. The entry Cupra Terramar S features a 1.5-liltre turbo petrol mild hybrid powertrain together with front wheel drive. Equipment levels are high with 18-inch alloy wheels, a 360-degree camera, power tailgate, tri-zone climate control, power heated front seats, wireless phone projection, and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 15-inch infotainment screen. Two higher grade models, the V and VZ gain a larger 2.0-litre turbo engine and all- wheel-drive, the flagship VZ also gaining an adaptive suspension. With SUVs now representing over 60 per cent of new vehicle sales the choice for this favored body style just gets wider – Jaecoo has added a larger J8 five-seat SUV onto the local market priced from $49,990 drive- away. Driving the latest Toyota Camry sedan, the mid-range Ascent Sport in the latest three model range at $42,990 plus on-road costs – now with Toyota’s fifth generation hybrid system in a refreshed body with a revamped interior and centre console and a nice choice of fabrics that give it more of classy feel. As I said earlier, this latest Camry has more of a feel of Toyota’s luxury brand Lexus. Sedan’s may not be on your radar but for those that like a sedan over an SUV the Camry Ascent Sport will not disappoint. Serviceability and reliability have always been a Camry high point – I was recently in a Camry hybrid taxi that had covered 440,000km still on its original engine and transmission, still on its third set of brake pads. The latest hybrid powertrain impressive – i managed 4.4L/100km, the only downside perhaps the needs for 95 octane unleaded – the hybrid system smooth, exceptionally quiet and responsive. Five-star safety plus a stack of active safety elements, a 360-degree camera and wireless phone charging. Dislikes the small 7-inch instrument display, the top line SL model gets a 12.3-inch unit while the steering wheel controls could be more user friendly. Otherwise, a very refined sedan for the money. Toyota Camry Ascent Sport sedan – latest generation hybrid impressive 1:30

The Toyota Camry has been around a long time - a medium sedan that just seems to get more refined with each new model – built locally from 1987 to 2017, imported since and fully hybrid since late last year like the rest of Toyota’s passenger car range. The current three model Camry sedan range consists of the Ascent, Ascent Sport and SL models prices starting at $39,990 plus on road costs and running to $53,990. I tested the Ascent Sport $42,990. And what an exceptional car this is – frankly having not driven a Camry for some time I came away impressed with its refinement. Before I get into the performance, the build quality, styling elements an material inside of this medium sized sedan felt more like Toyota’s luxury brand Lexus. Sedans may not be in vogue, SUV’s, last month reaching 60.5 per cent of total new car sales, however the Camry Ascent Sport at $42,990 is outstanding value – there’s a lot of equipment for that money, the interior classy and roomy with a restyled dash and centre console while overall Toyota’s fifth generation hybrid system is quieter, smoother, more fuel efficient in a body that now has real character. There’s now only one diesel powered medium sized SUV on the market and fortunately it will be here for a while – the 2025 Kia Sportage remains the last medium SUV with diesel power proving the most popular powertrain in the Sportage SUV line-up. Diesel power currently represents 36 per cent of Sportage sales growing from 30 per cent for most of last year. And despite the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard penalties coming into effect on July 1 Kia suggests the diesel option will remain for some time, the company able to offset penalties by achieving credits from its popular EV3 and EV5 models as well as a growing number of hybrids. The current 2.0-litre turbo diesel remains popular with its 416Nm of torque giving it a very relaxed performance - well suited to the four-wheel drive only diesel range. The ute market just grows year on year and looks set to intensify with new players – Hyundai Australia the latest player to throw its hat into the ring – with newly appointed Chief Executive Don Romano confirming his company cannot be competitive in Australia without one. The local company hopeful its parent can redesign sister company’s Kia Tasman with a hybrid or plug-in by hybrid powertrain to suit Hyundai’s requirements. The new local Hyundai boss adamant that the company can’t be a viable brand here without a ute in its range. The inability to rejig the Tasman could see Hyundai look to its strategic partnership with General Motors to source a U.S. produced pick-up for this market. Kia’s EV5 Earth electric all-wheel-drive SUV – different yet appealing mid-sized SUV 1:30

Behind the wheel of Kia’s electric mid-size SUV, the EV5. The first Kia to be built in China with the battery interestingly supplied by electric car giant BYD. There’s three trim grades Air, Earth and GT-line, I’m driving the mid-grade EV5 Earth at $68,990 drive-away, a 230kW dual electric motor all-wheel-drive with a long range 88.1kWh battery and a quoted range of 500km. The drive experience proved rewarding, my consumption around town running at 18.6 kWh/100km providing a range of 473km – charge time on my 11kW home charger from 10 to 100 percent just over 8 hours or overnight. I must admit the Kia EV5 Earth SUV grew on me the more I drove it – the styling subjective, but I personally got to like it over time, the interior a highpoint, great seats, the test cars Nougat Beige interior colours appealing in a dashboard design that is intuitive and different. Biggest gripe, the overly active and intrusive lane keep assist, speed limit recognition and drive attention warnings and I’m surprised Kia Australia has not addressed this annoyance. Driving Kia’s electric mid-sized EV5 SUV – similar in size to Kia’s petrol Sportage, although boxier and the first Kia to be made in China for this market. Three trim grades Air, Earth, and GT- Line – I’m driving the mid-grade EV5 Earth at $68,990 drive-away, a dual motor all-wheel drive with a long-range 88.1kWh battery providing a quoted 500km range. Features include synthetic leather seats, dual 12.3-inch interior screens,19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, a power tailgate, dual zone climate control and a five-inch climate control display which frustratingly is partly hidden by the rim of the steering wheel. The interior roomy, very accommodating in both seat rows with excellent cargo space but disappointingly there’s no wireless phone charging or 360-degree camera. For a family vehicle it also lacks a front console storage box but for rear passengers provides a pull-out storage draw under. I must admit my first visual impression of the Kia EV5 was not great, but it grew on me in time as did the drive experience with four drive modes while the charging process on my 11kW home charger was effortless and relatively fast. Ford’s Mustang makes a strong recovery – best sales in nearly 7 years 1:00

The car market this year has been somewhat unpredictable with a number of factors affecting various segments. What surprised last month was a resurgence in sales of the trusty Ford Mustang – a significant delay in the arrival of the latest S650 model saw pent up demand take the two-door Mustang to its best sales month in almost seven years. Who said the trusty V8 was dead in the water. 720 Mustangs were sold in May taking the year’s tally to 2489, more than it sold for the entire year in 2024. Interestingly, the volume selling GT Fastback V8 automatic at $86,990 now far more expensive than it was seven years ago – in mid-1918 it was $21,000 more affordable at $65,990. Renault’s Koleos SUV has been around in much the same guise since 2016 but holds the distinction of being the biggest selling Renault since that time – a good all-rounder and selling well in recent times. A new entry Evolution grade has just been added at $34,990 plus on-road costs undercutting the previous entry Zen model which sold last year at $42,500. The new pricing pits the highly regarded Koleos against newer Chinese SUV rivals, also undercutting the likes of Honda’s CR-V, Mazda’s CX-5, Hyundai’s Tucson and Kia’s Sportage. BMW’s 118 hatchback – sharp driving dynamics but with too harsh a ride 1:30

BMW updated their entry model hatchback last December – now simply called the 118 this small five door hatch has a lot of presence in a facelifted body that’s slightly longer and taller. Now $56,500 plus on-road costs but with more equipment and more tech savvy – slightly longer and taller, still powered by a 1.5-litre turbo three-cylinder driving through a seven-speed dual clutch automatic. This latest entry model BMW has a nice feel about, the interior especially well sorted with supportive seats, and a well- constructed dash layout with connected digital and infotainment screens. But with BMW’s latest iDrive 9 operating system which can become tedious to use but is very comprehensive. The drive rather sporty in the BMW tradition with good driving dynamics, beautiful steering, brakes and slick gear changes with the worst feature being ride quality. I’m not sure everybody who would buy a BMW 118 would need such a sport skewed ride but it is far too harsh and spoils an otherwise quality drive. Passive and active safety systems most comprehensive, a 360-degree camera a great driving aid while the adaptive cruise control is very polished in operation. Driving BMW’s new entry model – the 118 hatchback which arrived last December at $56,500 plus on-road costs. The small German five-door hatch restyled and powered by a familiar 1.5-litre turbo three-cylinder engine with a small lift in power and torque driving the front wheels through a seven- speed dual clutch transmission. Also included a sports mode with manual shift paddles. This latest BMW 118 is 41mm longer and 25mm taller, other dimensions remain unchanged. Internally it has slightly better rear legroom however like most small BMW’s it’s still on the tight side. The cabin has a premium feel with well-structured seats while the overall impression is one of sportiness in the BMW tradition, accentuated by nice finishes and a modern dash layout. Good instrumentation with a welcome head up display over, although the 10.7-inch touchscreen with so many options can be tedious to use. While the air vents below are mounted low and look like an afterthought. BMW claim to have added significant features to the 118 – the driver-assist systems also most comprehensive, there’s wireless phone charging and two USB ports in each row, comprehensive 360-degree camera views, front and rear parking sensors, parking assist and a welcome reversing assistant. Porsche the latest car company to re-evaluate its EV rollout 1:00

Porsche is the latest company to cancel plans to take much of its line-up electric by the end of the decade. At a recent Annual General Meeting with investors the German sports car maker said, “it would be a significantly longer transition phase globally, on the journey to electric mobility.” The slower than expected transition putting pressure on the company’s bottom line. According to Porsche CEO, Dr. Oliver Blume, “the world has changed – we are experiencing a fierce storm, in challenging times we are continuing to develop Porsche with a precise focus.” Previously announcing that most of its models would join its Macan SUV with electric powertrains Porsche is now making major changes. But the change of plan will come at a cost, the company confirming it will cut around 3,900 jobs by 2029 in order to save money in the long term. GWM Chairman suggests Chinese car industry is unhealthy with too many price cuts 0:59

While the Chinese car industry has enjoyed significant growth GWM’s Chairman Wei Jianjun has warned the industry is in an unhealthy state due to incessant price cuts. In an interview with Chinese publication Sina Finance the GWM Chairman suggested if it continues like this the Chinese auto industry will be seriously threatened. Not specifically referring to any Chinese car maker he warned the excessive and prolonged price war between rival Chinese brands, especially those selling electric vehicles, risks cutting corners on safety and reliability. Discounts have ranged up from Aud.$22,000. Following Mr. Wei comments shares in BYD, Leapmotor, Nio, and Geely fell by up to 9.5 percent. BYD recently announced subsidies and incentives in China – the entry Seagull EV Hatch reduced by Aud.$12,000 while Geely followed suit with similar incentives for its Chinese buyers. Driving Subaru’s Outback Sport Touring XT AWD – a special edition high riding wagon that sits at the top of the Outback range at $57,490 plus on- road costs. Distinguished with special Geyser Blue exterior paint and black 18-inch alloy wheels, also highly equipped. Power source the traditional 2.5-litre horizontally opposed four-cylinder turbocharged driving all four wheels through a continuously variable automatic. As has always been the case with this mainstay Subaru, the drive experience most reassuring. It’s not an SUV but a high riding wagon with a go-anywhere ability and it just gets better year on year. Yes, it’s been around for a while in its current guise and varied little over the years – just more refined and better equipped, a firm family favourite, practical with good rear seat room and load space and importantly a five-star ANCAP safety rating. The turbocharged engine perhaps showing its age a little in that it uses more petrol, and it does require higher grand 95 octane petrol – I achieved 11.1L/100 with mainly urban driving - but it is a permanent all-wheel drive and the tractability in the recent rain was confidence inspiring. Subaru’s Outback has been a firm family favourite for over 25 years. I’m driving the Outback Sport Touring XT, a special edition turbocharged model that sits at the top of the Outback’s model range priced at $57,490 plus on-road costs. The Outback best described as a high-riding wagon and the Sport Touring XT identifies with dark 18-inch alloy wheels and special Geyser Blue exterior paint. Inside, premium features such as Nappa leather seat inserts, power front seats, heated and ventilated seats, nine speaker Harman Kardon sound and a power sunroof and tailgate. The 2.5- litre horizontally opposed turbo four-cylinder features 350Nm of torque and links to a continuously variable automatic transmission. A very well sorted interior with large central touchscreen and nice instrumentation but a lack of buttons for aircon a disappointment. Both seat rows offer good room and are well equipped with USB ports and aircon outlets. The 5-litre supercharged F-Pace SVR 575 Ultimate Edition a stunning SUV and one that will become a collector’s item in time – super powerful, super luxurious and the test car I’m driving in Sorrento yellow, super special – hard to fault in performance, features, comfort, dynamics and price - $182,000 far cheaper than a Range Rover Sport P530 and far more exciting – the 5.0-litre V8 with 700Nm of torque and 8-speed automatic with steering wheel shift paddles inspiring. A full gamut of active driver assist systems, not intrusive, although the speed limit alert can become an annoyance. But fabulous brakes which you need when you have a 2133kg steed with 0 to 100km/hour acceleration of just 4 seconds. Jaguar will cease production of its last internal combustion cars at the end of the year, becoming an electric only manufacturer, also moving further upmarket. Ending 90 years of the celebrated Jaguar brand as it navigates a new future. According to Jaguar’s chief creative officer Gerry McGovern “the new electric model is the result of brave, unconstrained creative thinking and unwavering determination – the foundation stone for a new family of Jaguars that will look unlike anything you’ve seen before.” For many aficionados it’s a sad day, 90-years of history and heritage lost, even the Jaguar leaper badging will disappear with the company only expecting to retain around 10-15 percent of its existing customers. This week I’ve been driving the Jaguar F-Pace SVR 575 Ultimate Edition SUV, in bright yellow no less, the last ever V8 from the British brand and what an engine – just 60 examples of this Ultimate Edition will be available and bound to become collectors’ items. Honda has joined a growing number of major car makers changing direction away from battery electric vehicle development in response to slowing BEV sales. At a recent briefing in Tokyo Honda’s President Toshihiro Mibe confirmed the company was re-evaluating its BEV development plan up to 2030 by trimming 3 trillion yen from its previously allocated EV budget of 10 trillion yen. Nissan Motor Corporation is making huge changes as it struggles with disappointing financial results, slashing 11,000 jobs and closing seven production facilities. New CEO Ivan Espinosa says he wants to make total cost savings of around 500 million yen or $5.39 billion Australian dollars. Nissan has been hit by slow sales in China and the U.S., has ended talks of a merger with Honda and replaced its Chief Executive. Most evident in the car industry is how quickly potential buyers see the value in a new model. Chery’s Tiggo 4 SUV has quickly made a name for itself on value alone, simply the best value in a small SUV at present – two models, the Tiggo 4 Urban $23,990 drive-away and the better equipped Ultimate at $26,990 drive-away – as I said earlier the equipment level on the Ultimate makes for a very compelling package for a small family on a tight budget. And its pricing is where other small SUV’s start with their entry pricing and don’t feature the Chery Tiggo 4 Ultimate models impressive equipment list. Which includes dual-zone climate control air, a power sunroof with shade, heated front seats, wireless phone charging, front and rear parking sensors and a 360-degree camera. Only disappointment for me is the lack of a rear power door and a full-size spare wheel. Power source a 1.5-litre turbo petrol four-cylinder driving the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission. With 108kW and 210 Nm of torque its no fire breather but a nice driver, the performance best described as adequate while fuel consumption can get a little heavy if driven hard. AAA calls on the new Parliament for more action on road safety 1:00

Australia’s peak motoring body, the Australian Automobile Association has called on the re-elected Albanese Government for more action on road safety. The call comes as new figures show the nation’s road toll continues to climb. AAA Managing Director Michael Bradley said figures show road deaths are up by 18.1 per cent in the five years since Australian Governments set a target of halving national road deaths by 2030. Following my story on the recommendations of the N.S.W Parliamentary Committee inquiry into e-scooters and e-bikes I note the recent death of an e-scooter rider on the South Coast – the 41-year-old rider crashed onto the roadway and sadly was hit by a car. I don’t always agree with Harold Scruby from the Pedestrian Council of Australia, but I did agree with his article in the Telegraph on Tuesday titled States e-madness must end before we’re e-limited. Rightly taking the N.S.W. Government to task for proposing new rules and regulations for e- scooters that other states have already found unworkable – allowing anyone 16 and over to ride e-scooters on 50km/hour roads as well as shared paths is a recipe for disaster – with no training, no license, no registration and no insurance. Harold Scruby does himself an injustice claiming the road toll in N.S.W is up 18 percent, its up 18 in number or 14 per cent while his argument that pedestrians don’t need education is one eyed – he should witness the number of pedestrians in the City in particular who walk onto pedestrian crossings texting or on the phone. Further on the Zeekr X SUV – a compact Chinese electric SUV released last October and like many Chinese EVs already price reduced. Two models, the rear wheel drive now $56,900 and the AWD $64,900 which I’m driving with dual electric motors fed by a 66kWhour battery. The performance exhilarating - 0 to 100km/hour in just 3.8 seconds – that performance is very polished, and the Zeekr X feels premium in all it does – from my perspective a cut above most similar priced SUV’s that I’ve driven. The styling sharp, distinctive and different, a body with great interior room for a compact SUV. Fit and finishes are quality. Range 400kms which around town I found accurate but on the open road the brisk performance eats up the battery much quicker – I averaged 16kW/h/100km consumption around town but on a hard throttle it rose to 20kWh/100km fairly quickly. Charging on my 11kW AC wall charger took 5 ½ hours from 20 to 80 percent of charge. A supremely comfortable small SUV apart from some pitch on a rough surface accentuated obviously by the additional battery weight but more than acceptable. Active safety elements however too intrusive particularly the driver distraction alert. Warranty underdone too at 5 years/ unlimited km. Peking to Paris Motor challenge got under way last Saturday, the event covering 14,500 kilometres over 37 days across twelve countries. 80 entries started at the Great Wall of China including five from Australia, with this year’s challenge taking crews across China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, across the Caspian Sea to Azerbaijan continuing into the tough tracks of Georgia and Turkey, followed with a sting in the tail across Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Austria, Switzerland before finishing in France. Driving Renault’s Megane E-Tech SUV – a small French SUV with a difference, setting it apart from the look alike new breed of Chinese electric cars. At $54,990 plus on-road costs more than competitive, cheaper than Volvo’s EX30 and in a way more charming. The styling impressive, hatch like with large 20-inch wheels tucked into the corners. Step inside and it breathes clever design, quality materials and individuality. With a lightweight 60kWh battery feeding a single electric motor driving the front wheels it offers a driving range of 454Km which I found accurate. Relatively light for an electric car with a slim lightweight battery under the floor I found the energy consumption excellent at 14.1 kWh/100km. Electric cars tend to ride harder` due to battery weight – not so for the Megane E-Tech, extremely comfortable helped by great seats although disappointing only with manual adjustment. Welcome five-star safety plus four available drive modes that noticeably change the complexion of the drive, while steering feel is a high point. As I said earlier, it feels more premium in all it does apart from some tyre roar on courser road surfaces. At last, a French car this week – I was really looking forward to driving the Renault Megane E-Tech SUV. Visually, this electric Megane has a great silhouette more like a hatchback with large 20-inch alloys tucked right into the corners, the styling impressive and giving it a more premium feel although the resultant high tail tends to limit rear visibility. With a 60kWh battery pack feeding a single electric motor with 160kW and 320Nm of torque driving through the front wheels it offers a driving range of 454Km. Step in and your immediately impressed with a quality and functional interior with great finishes. A wide 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and interconnected 9-inch multimedia touchscreen thankfully combine with switchgear to make it all very user friendly, something the Chinese newcomers could well learn from. There’s Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, dual zone climate control, wireless phone charging, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel. At $54,990 plus on-road costs the Megane E-Tech is well priced, with combination cloth and leather seats that offer great comfort but lack power adjustment while the interior is a standout in design. E-scooter and e-bike recommendations under scrutiny 1:00

In a move that simply beggars belief the N.S.W. Parliamentary Inquiry into e-scooters and e-bikes has recommended allowing e-scooters to be ridden on shared paths and roads across N.S.W if they are ridden by a person older than 16. They will remain outlawed on pedestrian only footpaths. This hair-raising proposal would allow a speed limit of 10 to 20km/hour on shared paths and a 20 km/hour limit on roads where the speed limit is 50 km/hour or below. N.S.W Roads Minister Jenny Atchison said that by regulating their use it would be easier to crack down on their behaviour. Is she for real – allowing e-scooters onto the road at 20km/hour in all weather conditions is a recipe for disaster – with no license or identification its unmanageable and surely unfair to Police who have enough to worry about without having to worry about e-scooters. Talking further on National Road Safety Week starting today – a time surely to reflect on the current poor driving standard in this state, The campaign is national however we still don’t have a set of national road rules – individual states still singing from a different hymn book. National Road Safety Week is the work of Peter Frazer who daughter Sarah was tragically killed by a truck driver in a totally avoidable crash on the Hume Highway at Mittagong in Feb 2012 when her car broke down. Tow truck driver Geoffrey Clark and Sarah were loading her car when they were killed by the passing truck. Soon after N.S.W. expanded the road rule requiring drivers to slow down to 40km/h for emergency responders to also include tow truck and roadside assistance workers. Amazingly, Victoria only announced this week that from July 1 the current road rule requiring drivers and motorcycle riders to slow down to 40km/h for police, fire, and ambulance would be expanded - now including tow trucks, roadside assistance and incident response vehicles displaying flashing lights. It beggars’ belief that after Sarah Frazer’s tragic death in 2012 it’s taken Victoria 13 years to implement a road rule which surely should have been national road rule from Day 1. National Road Safety Week kicks off today, a time to reflect on the current poor driving standard in this state, National Road Safety Week the project of Peter Frazer whose daughter Sarah was tragically killed by a truck driver in a totally avoidable crash on the Hume Highway at Mittigong in February 2012. Since then, Peter has devoted his life to improving road safety - founding SARAH, standing for Safer Australian Roads and Highways. The driving force behind Australia’s National Road Safety Week and the road safety symbol the Yellow Ribbon. A campaign suggesting you wear a yellow ribbon on yourself and your car to show your support and make a pledge on the SARAH website – “to drive so others survive” – to me given the total disregard by many motorists to road safety wearing a yellow ribbon on yourself and your car is far too weak a message to what is a worsening problem year on year. We’ve just had two long weekends with increased fatalities and numerous injuries. It’s clear there has been substantial vehicle growth in N.S.W. – a lot of new drivers mainly from overseas with poor knowledge of our road rules and driving conditions – you witness it almost daily – driver behavior and attitude is at an all-time low, and driver education and compliance testing is in need of a radical overhaul. Perhaps indicative of the hard trading conditions and highly competitive new vehicle market Mazda has taken the axe to pricing on its CX-60 SUV. Up to $5,560 has been shaved from some models in the luxury CX-60 line- up - now priced from $53,990 drive-away while six new variants have been added across the Pure and Touring grades. First launched in 2023 the Mazda CX-60 was criticised for its harsh ride and twitchy gear shifts. As such the update brings new rear springs and dampers, revised stability controls and a recalibrated 8-speed automatic transmission. As reported in the Australian this week it seems the luxury car tax could soon be abolished as the re-elected Government gets calls from the European Union to speed things up on a proposed free trade agreement. For so long a thorn in the side of the car industry the Luxury Car tax most affecting European imports and depending on the vehicles sticker price adding 33 cents for every dollar it is over a threshold of $91,387 on fuel efficient vehicles, and on all others that average more than 7L/100km, $80,567. To make matters worse from July 1, the fuel consumption figure will lower to 3.5L/100 trapping a number of previously exempt models. Mazda’s CX-5 Maxx Sport SUV – long standing but still a very competent SUV 1:31

Further on Mazda’s long standing CX-5 SUV but still highly competitive with ten models in a mix of petrol and diesel and front or all-wheel drive, I’m driving the second tier 2.5-litre six-speed automatic CX-5 Maxx Sport front wheel drive at $43,184 drive-away with optional metallic paint. I did nearly 900km over the Anzac weekend with a lot of highway cruising at the open road limit. The naturally aspirated four-cylinder with 140kW and 252Nm of torque did a workmanlike job but what surprised was the economy, averaging 7.4L/100km on 91 grade petrol with four passengers. This is simply a great allrounder, well shod 17-inch alloy wheels provide a very comfortable ride while the electric power assistance offers good feel whilst parking and on the run. Comfort and convenience items include dual zone climate control, satellite navigation, a head-up instrument display, well bolstered cloth seats, a rear-view camera, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto plus a good level of active safety elements. Thankfully the warning elements are not intrusive like many of the new breed of Chinese SUV’s. Disappointments – no wireless phone charger and the lack of a power rear door. Driving the popular Mazda CX-5 SUV today, Mazda’s top seller, it’s been around a long time in ten models, a mix of petrol and diesel and front or all-wheel drive. No hybrid but I’m told its coming. I drove the second tier 2.5-litre six-speed automatic CX-5 Maxx Sport front wheel drive - $43,184 drive-away, which included optional Soul Red Chrystal Metallic paint at $795. A colour that has in many ways become a trademark of Mazda. The CX-5 a good looker, still our fourth best-selling medium SUV, behind Toyota’s RAV4 and getting some strong competition these days from Kia’s Sportage and Hyundai’s Tuscon. I did nearly 900km over the Anzac weekend and it really surprised - well sorted, extremely comfortable for four adults – the Maxx Sport well specified apart from the lack of wireless phone charging and a power rear door. I finally caught up with the small Chery Tiggo 4 SUV recently – this relatively new Chinese newcomer has received favourable reviews – a highly equipped SUV in two sharply priced grades – the Urban at $23,990 drive-away and the Ultimate at $26,990 drive-away – both surprising in terms of value and very well-built for that money too. Utilising a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder with 108kW and 210Nm linked to a continuously variable automatic driving the front wheels. The Chery Tiggo 4 Ultimate model with sunroof and dual zone climate control air is incredible value and unmatched in features by the likes of MG’s ZS and Haval’s Jolion while it undercuts the likes of Hyundai’s Kona, Toyota Corolla Cross, Mazda CX-30 and Kia’ Seltos. With sales slowing to just 190 units in the first quarter Mazda has slashed the prices of its large CX-90 SUV from $6,000 to $7800 across the 10-model range. The entry CX-90 G50E Touring now starting at $68,800 plus on-road costs. The flagship D50E Azami Takumi dropping to $91,924 plus on-road costs. The CX-90 was criticised at its launch in late 2023 for pushing the large SUV into much dearer pricing compared to the outgoing CX-9 which was firm family favourite at a much more competitive price. The CX-90 offering two power trains, either a 3.3-litre turbo in-line six-cylinder petrol or diesel, both with 48-volt mild hybrid assistance and linked to eight- speed dual clutch automatics.
