Welcome to the first episode of our 5-week series on emotions. Today, I am sharing my review of the movie Inside Out 2 as a springboard to dive deep into the world of emotions. My hope with this series is that by the end of July, you will feel equipped with tools and a deeper understanding of yourself to manage and process both difficult and positive emotions, helping you feel more in control of your life.

  • Understanding Emotions:
    • There are no negative or positive emotions – they are either helpful or unhelpful.
    • Some emotions are hard to feel but are still necessary.
    • Emotions are a window into your beliefs, thoughts, needs, and desires.
    • Emotions are vibrations in your body, triggered by thoughts, sending signals that create your actions and behaviors.
  • Role of Emotions:
    • Reflect our inner state.
    • Helped our ancestors navigate dangerous situations.
    • Modern society gives us similar feelings even if the situations aren't as dangerous.
  • Becoming More Aware of Your Emotions:
    • Mindfulness: Stay present with your body and emotions as they arise.
    • Recognize Triggers: Identify what triggers your emotions and your adaptive strategies.
    • Body Awareness: Notice physical sensations associated with emotions.
    • Journaling: A simple yet effective way to understand your emotions.
    • Breathwork: Use breath to calm your mind and get in touch with your body.
    • Acceptance: Acknowledge and process your emotions.
    • Shared Humanity: Recognize the shared humanity in emotions.
    • Healthy Expression: Find healthy ways to express your emotions.
