When it first premiered in 1999, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit was created not just as a spin-off of Law & Order, but as a vehicle to tell stories about the kinds of crimes that, at the time, were rarely featured on television, including rape, domestic violence, and human trafficking. Many of the episodes have been sobering, to say the least. When it comes to shining a light on these types of crimes and their victims, Law & Order: SVU stands apart. Peter Scanavino, who joined the show in its 16th season, has often shared how he believes SVU’s unique focus makes it more compelling and special than typical police dramas.
