In this episode, Rich and Jake Hutt discuss:

  • How mentorship played a pivotal role in his journey from hockey to golf
  • The importance of embracing failure and learning through repetition
  • How combining golf and music set him apart in content creation
  • The process of skill acquisition and constantly refining new abilities
  • Why relationships and generosity create long-term success

Key Takeaways:

  • One powerful conversation can completely change the course of a career. Recognizing an opportunity early and following the right guidance can open doors that once seemed impossible.
  • "Be kind, be nice to people, treat people well." It’s a simple rule, but relationships built on respect and generosity can lead to unexpected opportunities.
  • Creativity thrives at the intersection of unrelated skills. Golf and music may seem like opposites, but their combination created a completely unique space that people connect with.
  • Some of the best ideas come from simply doing the work. Overthinking kills momentum, but taking action—even imperfectly—leads to progress and valuable lessons.
  • The best way to get better at anything is through relentless repetition. Learning a skill, whether golf or music, isn’t about instant perfection—it’s about showing up and putting in the reps.

"Embracing failure, for me was the single most important lesson and thing that I think shaped who I am today." Jake Hutt
