#021 Dr Matthew Yousefzadeh - The Science of Slowing Ageing

Matt Yousefzadeh, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and a member of the Columbia Center for Translational Immunology and the Columbia Center for Human Longevity. He received Ph.D. from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and completed postdoctoral fellowship at Scripps Florida and the University of Minnesota to study the mechanisms by which endogenous DNA damage drives ageing. Dr. Yousefzadeh’s laboratory utilises in vitro and in vivo models of ageing to explore the effect of senescent cells, in particular senescent immune cells, on driving organismal ageing. The mechanistic studies of cell and cell non-autonomous effects provide insight into interorgan communication and how different pillars of ageing can serve to drive ageing in a tissue or cell-type-specific manner. Using samples from human and animal models of ageing, the laboratory focuses on developing useful biomarkers of ageing with translational potential. Lastly, the laboratory uses models of natural ageing, accelerated ageing, and preclinical models of disease to test the efficacy of geroprotective compounds like senolytics.
