Liver biochemical abnormalities are seen in 15-76% of patients with untreated thyrotoxicosis - that is, those not taking antithyroid medication. This liver dysfunction is typically related to direct injury to the liver, comorbid heart failure, and associated autoimmune conditions. The good news is that, in most cases, liver enzymes can return to normal without lasting damage to the liver.
Today, I’m exploring what the research shows about liver dysfunction in those with hyperthyroidism. I’m talking about the relationship between untreated hyperthyroidism and liver enzyme abnormalities, potential causes, and the importance of monitoring liver function in hyperthyroid patients.
In this episode, you’ll learn about:
- Causes of liver dysfunction in those with hyperthyroidism
- How antithyroid medications can affect liver enzymes
- Specific liver enzymes impacted by untreated hyperthyroidism
- The relationship between elevated alkaline phosphatase and bone density concerns
- The correlation between heart failure and more severe liver dysfunction
- Autoimmune conditions that can impact liver health
As always, I hope you find this episode valuable, and I look forward to catching you in the next episode!

Some people recover from COVID in weeks; others feel broken for months—what could be the difference? In this episode, I talk with Dr. Evan Hirsch, a fatigue expert who’s helped thousands recover from long COVID and chronic fatigue using his four-step Energy MD Method. Whether you’re dealing with lingering symptoms or just trying to understand this complex condition better, there’s a lot to unpack here. Many people are told to “wait and watch” with subclinical hyperthyroidism. But is that really the best path? I explain what low TSH truly means, how it ties into conditions like subclinical Graves’ disease, and why some symptoms deserve serious attention. I also share how I approach this naturally using tools like bugleweed, adrenal support, and targeted lifestyle changes to help shift thyroid markers.
