122. F*ck Being Calladita: Dismantling Calladita Culture
Manage episode 490775825 series 3460143
In this episode, I break down what “calladita te ves más bonita” really means — and how it's rooted in colonization, patriarchy, and diet culture. I’m inviting you to dismantle Calladita Culture — that insidious expectation that tells mujeres, especially Latinas, to stay quiet, not make a fuss, to shrink themselves, and swallow their pain. From phrases like “no hagas escándalo” to the silence surrounding abuse, body shame, and generational trauma — we’re naming it all, sin filtro and unapologetically.
As a sociologist, I unpack how this culture of silence is deeply tied to diet culture, white supremacy, and systems of control. I share how it shows up in our bodies, our families, and our identities — and how we begin to unlearn it.
You’ll walk away with tangible ways to reclaim your voice, stop apologizing for taking up space, speak your truth (even if your voice shakes), and understand how honoring your truth is a revolutionary act.
Remember that we weren’t born to be calladitas. We were born to be loud, tender, complex, and free.
