２００１年２月１０日、ハワイのオアフ島の近くの海で、アメリカの原子力潜水艦が愛媛県の宇和島水産高校の船にぶつかりました。高校の船は沈んで、船を動かす技術などを勉強していた生徒や先生など９人が亡くなりました。
この事故から、１０日で２０年になりました。高校では亡くなった人のために祈る式がありました。事故が起こった８時４３分、沈んだ船についていた鐘を９回鳴らして、亡くなった９人の家族や生徒など２６０人が静かに祈りました。
校長は「２０年が過ぎても、怒りや悲しい気持ちは消えません。この事故を忘れてはいけないと強く思います」と話しました。式に出席した高校２年生は「生まれる前の事故なので、高校に入ってから知りました。悲しい事故のことをたくさんの人に知ってほしいと思います」と話していました。
